Horse Racing ? Jockey Club Round Table ? PhatzRadio

Jockey Club Logo

(PhatzRadio ? Editor PDL) I spent about 2 hours watching the Jockey Club Round Table, held at Saratoga Race Course, held on Sunday August 14, 2011. The presentation is available on the Jockey Club website. The information provided in the two hour presentation was both informative and comprehensive. Subjects included important recommendation to eliminate race day medications, a presentation about the Equine Injury Database and then a report on the future of the horse racing industry.

It is not a surprise that the headline coming from the conference was the projected $2+ million, the Jockey Club is committing to the implementation of the recommendation presented by McKinsey & Company. McKinsey was contracted by the Jockey Club to analyze the business future of horse racing. Honestly, this is not for the faint of heart and having attended more technology strategy meetings in my lifetime, this was probably one of the better ones I had the opportunity to observe.

The recommendations come in a number of forms but basically at its core, the conclusion that horse racing lacks any media presence, is marred by a complex betting model, and its tracks remind too many people of a New York City Subway Station (probably a local stop), all constitute a perception that a trip to the track is like returning to the 1940s.

McKinsey sees New Technology as a way to increase exposure and tap the growing number of Internet Gaming enthusiasts by using these channels to expose and promote the sport. Such recommendations like Social Media Gaming and Free Bet Race Formats will attract people and educate them on the betting techniques in much the same way that Texas Holdem popularized Poker.

I commend the Jockey Club for their long history of service to the Racing Industry and feel they are looking to improve the sport of Horse Racing. While many of the recommendations are noteworthy, I strongly recommend you checking out the Jockey Club site, review the recommendations and form your own opinion. The key to the success of any plan is the commitment of the participants.

Over the course of the next few months, Track Talk will report on the progress being made on these initiatives. Time will tell if these recommendations and initiatives are simply band-aids or potent medicine, to an ailing sport.
