"Margin Call," hitting theaters and video-on-demand Oct. 21, reminds us of how little of our financial future we really control. The movie focuses on employees at an investment bank as the financial crisis starts to hit, and hit big. Of course, shuffling papers and staring at computer screens isn't normally that interesting, so Hollywood's bulked it up with stars like Kevin Spacey, Zachary Quinto, Stanley Tucci and Demi Moore, and scenes in which employees frantically bury evidence (we hope it's evidence and not a body) in their yards.
In this TODAY.com exclusive video clip, Kevin Spacey plays a manager who bluntly tells his workforce that 80% of their co-workers have been fired. "They were good people and they were good at their jobs," he says. "You're better. ... They're not to be thought of again." Coffee is for closers! Wait, wrong movie.
Video: Exclusive clip: '80% of this floor was fired' (on this page)Being a true company man, Spacey's character paints the devastating losses as an opportunity, telling the remaining workers that "Three of the seven guys between you and your boss's job are gone." Yeah, because you'd want to climb the corporate ladder at this position-slashing, don't-think-of-your-fired-friends kind of an organization.
But Zachary Quinto isn't buying it, and he looks to be our hero. Check out the exclusive clip and give thanks that whatever your job situation, you don't work at this place. And then maybe start hiding money under your mattress.
In addition to the clip, we also have the full trailer.
