Lebanon PM invites pope to visit, discusses Syria (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Lebanon's prime minister has invited Pope Benedict XVI to visit his country, which the Vatican sees as an important symbol of religious coexistence in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with Benedict for about 20 minutes Monday during an overnight visit to Rome that also included talks with the new Italian foreign minister.

The Vatican said the discussions touched on the crisis in Syria and "the need for all parties to commit themselves to peaceful coexistence founded on justice, reconciliation and respect for the dignity of human beings and their inalienable rights."

Members of Mikati's delegation said he extended an invitation to Benedict to visit Lebanon. There was no word from the Vatican, but such a trip has been rumored.

98% The Muppets

The Muppets plot is ingeniously clever in it's simplicity. Walter, a puppet, discovers that evil oil magnate Tex Richman has purchased the historic Muppet Theater. Tex maintains he plans to turn it into a Muppet museum, but Walter overhears Tex's real intention to raze the hallowed site so that he can drill for oil. Apparently the sale may still be halted if $10 million can be raised to buy the theater back. The Muppets and Walter, along with his human brother Gary and his girlfriend Mary, all band together to put on a telethon to raise the money. The narrative is perfect because it allows the action to reunite all of our favorite characters by first portraying what they have been doing. Then it inspires them to put on a song-and-dance variety performance, much in the same way that The Muppet Show used to do every week. In other words, they get to be themselves, something 90s efforts like The Muppet Christmas Carol or Muppet Treasure Island didn't permit them to do. The story often brilliantly straddles the line between naivet? and cynicism. The self aware script even addresses The Muppets waning place in pop culture but without ever being disrespectful. The Muppets offers everything a longtime follower could desire as a fan and everything a newcomer would need to become a fan.The Muppets is sarcastic, hilarious, self knowing, adult and nostalgic but also warm, tender, sweet, childlike and modern. The dialogue zings with a love of life rarely seen in modern cinema. It's almost as if the film was created in a simpler, more innocent time. It's surprisingly touching at times. I wouldn't have thought that writer/star Jason Segel and screenwriter Nicholas Stoller (who wrote and directed the raunchy Get Him to the Greek) could have duplicated the 70s ethos of The Muppets so accurately in their script, but they do. They were clearly inspired by the benevolent spirit of Jim Henson. He most definitely would be proud of this unadulterated celebration of his beloved creation. Without question, the best Muppet movie yet.

NATO strike on Pakistan military 'couldn't come at a worse time'

US officials are scrambling to avoid a further breakdown in US-Pakistan relations after a mistaken NATO strike killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

? A daily summary of global reports on security issues.

As the fallout from a mistaken US attack on a Pakistani border outpost on Saturday continues, Pakistan has ordered the US to clear out an airbase it used for drone attacks on targets in Afghanistan.

The US is scrambling to avoid a further scuppering of US-Pakistan ties, which have already deteriorated tremendously in the months since the unilateral US raid on Osama bin Laden's Pakistan hideout.

Although the US has mistakenly attacked Pakistani targets before, this strike was far deadlier, according to the Guardian. A Pakistani government emergency committee convened in Islamabad announced today that Pakistan would " 'revisit and undertake a complete review of all programs, activities and cooperative arrangements' with the US, and US-led forces in Afghanistan, 'including diplomatic, political, military and intelligence.' "

"It is a very tragic incident and?it couldn't come at a worse time," said Brig. Gen. Carsten Jacobson, a spokesman for the international military coalition in Afghanistan, according to the Wall Street Journal. "We are all aware of the grave consequences that an incident like this can have."

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta released a "rare" joint statement Saturday expressing their condolences.

The Shamsi airbase, located in western Baluchistan (see map), is the base for the US drone program, according to the Guardian. It was given over to the US after 9/11 and was "heavily used for launching the war in Afghanistan." However, the Wall Street Journal reports that the US ceased using the base for drone attacks this summer after Pakistan banned it this summer.?

Pakistan also blocked supply routes for NATO troops in Afghanistan following the attack, in which ISAF helicopters accidentally shelled checkpoints on the Pakistani side of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. At least 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed and at least 13 injured.

Agence France-Presse reports that Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar contacted Ms. Clinton to convey Pakistan's "deep sense of rage."

Story: Crazed weekend launches crucial retail season

Herald Square in New York was bustling at 6 p.m. ET Thursday, the Associated Press reported, with shoppers looking to snag discounts at Old Navy and other stores that were open on the Thanksgiving. By 9:45 p.m. ET, more than 300 people were waiting outside a Best Buy in New York before it opened at midnight. An hour later, nearly 2,000 were in line at another Best Buy in St. Petersburg, Florida, ahead of its midnight opening.

Retailers hope the earlier openings will make Black Friday shopping more convenient for Americans who are more likely to be worried about high unemployment and the other challenges they face in the weak economy.

A Texas couple is set to tie the knot after meeting three years ago while waiting in a Black Friday shopping line at Target. KXAS-TV's Amanda Guerra reports.

Black Friday is important to merchants because it kicks off the holiday shopping season, a time when they can make 25 to 40 percent of their annual revenue. It's expected that shoppers will spend nearly $500 billion during the holiday shopping season, or about 3 percent more than they did last year.

PhotoBlog: Black Friday shopping starts on Thursday

"It's a good move to try to get shoppers to spend sooner, before they run out of money," says Burt Flickinger, III, president of retail consultancy Strategic Resource Group.

About 34 percent of consumers plan to shop on Black Friday, up from 31 percent last year, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers, and 16 percent had planned to shop on Thanksgiving Day itself. For the weekend, 152 million people are expected shop, up from 138 million last year.

Update at 5:45 a.m. ET: Authorities say gunfire erupted at a North Carolina mall as holiday shoppers gathered, the Associated Press reported.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said detectives were looking for two suspects after gunfire rang out at Cross Creek Mall in Fayetteville early Friday. No injuries were reported.

The first shots were fired around 2 a.m. outside the mall near a food court entrance. Investigators say several more shots were fired after one of the suspects ran inside the mall.

Legal issue snags Holiday outreach plan - WISH TV 8

HOPE, Ind. (AP) - A program designed to help struggling families during Christmas won't be able to provide gifts for needy children this year after organizers ran afoul of the state's charity raffle laws.

Reserve police officers in Hope, about 40 miles southeast of Indianapolis, recently tried to raffle a shotgun as a fundraiser for Christmas outreach efforts. The proceeds would have helped officers take underprivileged children shopping and provide holiday food baskets for struggling families.

But the raffle was canceled after members of the Hope Town Council questioned whether the event was legal, The Republic reported (http://bit.ly/uzcwph ).

Indiana law requires organizations hosting a charity raffle to register as a tax-exempt charity and be licensed by the Indiana Gaming Commission, said Larry DeLaney of the gaming panel.

Greg Potts, a senior reserve officer for Hope police who oversees the group's fundraising efforts, said he hadn't been aware of the requirements when the tickets were sold. The officers had done the holiday outreach for at least seven years. Last year, they took about 10 children shopping for Christmas gifts, spending $30 to $40 on each of them.

Potts said there isn't enough time between now and Christmas to complete the process to conduct the raffle legally.

All ticket buyers were refunded their money, he said.

Potts said he expects the reserve officers to get the necessary approvals before next year so they can resume the holiday raffle.

He said there was no issue with the raffle prize being a shotgun.

"We could have been raffling off potholders; it's just the fact that Indiana state statute says you have to have a license, and we didn't have that," he said.

Salazar: No new federal limits on target shooting (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration said Wednesday it will not impose new restrictions on recreational shooting on public lands, a Thanksgiving gift for thousands of gun owners and hunters concerned about a draft plan to limit target shooting near residential areas.

The policy, proposed this summer, could have closed millions of acres of federal land to gun use, a prospect that caused alarm among gun owners, particularly in the West, where target shooting on public land is a longtime tradition. Hunting season for deer and other game begins around Thanksgiving in many states.

Officials said they were trying to ensure public safety in rapidly growing areas of the West, where some residents have clashed with gun owners who use public lands for target practice.

In a memo obtained by The Associated Press, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said his department supports opportunities for hunting, fishing and recreational shooting on federal land.

"By facilitating access, multiple use and safe activities on public lands, the Bureau of Land Management helps ensure that the vast majority of the 245 million acres it oversees are open and remain open to recreational shooting," he wrote.

The memo directs BLM Director Bob Abbey to "take no further action to develop or implement" the draft policy on recreational shooting.

Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., who had sharply criticized the earlier proposal, said Wednesday he was glad the Obama administration had reversed course.

"But it would be a lot better for everyone if they stopped doing things to restrict gun rights that require them to back off in the first place," said Rehberg, a frequent Obama critic who is challenging incumbent Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., next year.

"One thing is sure: You can't blink with these guys or they'll slip something through," Rehberg added in an email.

The BLM said in announcing the draft policy on recreational shooting that many areas previously used for target practice are now too close to houses or other development. By 2020, such "hot spots" were projected in all 48 continental states, the BLM said.

The BLM draft plan would have provided gun owners with a map of nearby areas suitable for target practice.

The Wildlife and Hunting Heritage Conservation Council, an advisory committee of conservationists and outdoors groups, expressed concern over the draft plan. Instead of restricting recreational shooting, the government should provide improvements for safe shooting such as berms, benches and target holders, the group said.

Florida A&M band leader fired after drum major's death

By msnbc.com staff and The Associated Press

The longtime band director at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee was fired on Wednesday?after the suspected hazing death of a drum major.

University?president James Ammons sent band director Julian White a termination letter, citing White's inability to stop the suspected hazing in the band and music department.

"We are serious, this has to stop," Ammons told?the Orlando Sentinel. "The highest priority we have as a university is protecting the health, safety and well-being of our students."

Officials say 26-year-old Robert Champion was found unresponsive on a bus parked outside an Orlando hotel on Saturday night after the school's football team lost to rival Bethune-Cookman. Champion was vomiting and had complained he couldn't breathe before he collapsed.

A telephone message left at White's?home by the Associated Press wasn't immediately returned. White has been placed on paid administrative leave and has 10 days to respond to his firing.

The exact cause and manner of Champion's death are pending the autopsy results, said Sheri Blanton, a forensic coordinator for the medical examiner. There is no timetable for getting the results back, but most cases take 10 to 12 weeks, she said.

FAMU officials acknowledged that 30 students have been kicked off the band this semester due to hazing incidents. There are currently three investigations.

On Tuesday, officials at the Tallahassee school suspended the famed Marching 100 band and any other ensemble that performs under the supervision of the FAMU music department. The move affects more than 400 students.

Greenhouse gas concentrations reach record levels, will linger for decades, new report finds

A report from the United Nations' weather agency, the?World Meteorological Organization, found that greenhouse gases are more prevalent in our atmosphere than at any time since the Industrial Revolution.

Concentrations of the three main greenhouse gases blamed for global warming reached record levels in 2010 and will linger in the atmosphere for decades, even if the world stops emissions output today, the U.N.'s weather agency said on Monday.

Carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, rose by 2.3 parts per million to 389 ppm in 2010 from the previous year, higher than the 1990s average (1.5 ppm) and the past decade (2.0 ppm), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said in its annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin.

If the world is to limit global average temperature rise to below 2 degrees Celsius, scientists say emissions volumes must not have more than 450 ppm of carbon dioxide.

"The atmospheric burden of greenhouse gases due to human activities has yet again reached record levels since pre-industrial time," said WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud.

"Even if we managed to halt our greenhouse gas emissions today, and this is far from the case, they would continue to linger in the atmosphere for decades to come and so continue to affect the delicate balance of our living planet and our climate," he said.

The report adds to a number of warnings that time is running out to act on climate change and prevent worsening extreme weather as the Earth's temperature rises.

BP data earlier this year showed global carbon dioxide emissions grew at their fastest rate since 1969 last year, as countries rebounded from economic recession.

In 2010, countries agreed in Cancun, Mexico, that deep emissions cuts were needed to hold an increase in global average temperature below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, a threshold beyond which scientists say risks even more extreme weather, crop failure and major floods.

Delegates from nearly 200 countries will meet in South Africa next week for a U.N. summit but only modest steps towards a broader climate deal are seen as likely.

Hotting up

The WMO said greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere increased by 1.4 percent last year from 2009 and 29 percent since 1990, mainly driven by fossil fuel use and agriculture.

The WMO measured the overall amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, based on monitoring stations in more than 50 countries, including natural emissions and absorption processes - so-called sources and sinks - as well as emissions caused by human activity.

Three of the most dangerous gases, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, were more prevalent in the atmosphere in 2010 than at any time since the industrial revolution.

The second biggest greenhouse gas, methane, has been growing in the past five years after levelling off between 2000 and 2006, for reasons that are not fully understood.

The third biggest greenhouse gas is nitrous oxide, which can trap almost 300 times as much heat as carbon dioxide. Its main human source is the use of nitrogen-based fertilisers, which the report said had "profoundly affected the global nitrogen cycle".

The impact of fertiliser use is so marked that more nitrous oxide is detected in the northern hemisphere, where more fertiliser is used, than in the south.

The WMO data showed no pause in the growth of greenhouse gases and more work needs to be done to help understand which policies would have the most effect, the report's authors said.

So far, the clearest discernable impact of policies was a decrease in chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, which were banned because they caused depletion of the ozone layer.

But hydrofluorocarbons, which have replaced CFCs, are also potent greenhouse gases and their abundance in the atmosphere, while still small, is rising at a rapid rate.

Shasta Nelson, M.Div.: Blessing of the Open Hands

Anyone who hangs out with me for long will frequently hear me use the metaphor of an open hand. It's a hand gesture where a hand is cupped, palms up. Relaxed in a way, and yet, intentional enough that I could bring water to my lips with those fingers if needed.

The very act of making those open hands has become my own little mantra in life, inviting my heart to reflect the handmade sign. It's how I want to show up in life, especially in my relationships.

What Open Hands Are Not

For when I see those open hands I am reminded of all that they are and, conversely, all that they are not.

  • If my hands are open -- then that means they are not limp, by my side, unwilling, un-noticing, or incapable of being ready to receive.
  • If my hands are open -- then that means I am not clinging, fists tight, trying to hold, control, keep or grasp.
  • If my hands are open -- then that means I am not palms out, pushing away, putting up walls, resisting, defending, refusing to let life in.
  • If my hands are open -- then that means they are not flat and stretched, unable to hold anything of value, refusing to be a safe container for that which is given in my life.
  • If my hands are open -- then that means they aren't trying to stretch the fingers ever wider to hold more and more. For they would know that as the fingers spread, so do the gifts begin to seep out like sand through the cracks.

No, I want to step into life with gentle, but firmly-cupped hands. Not needing to grab, push, cling, force or refuse. Rather, I show up with a readiness that says I will look for things to hold, people to love, life to relish, moments to enjoy, gifts to appreciate.

What Open Hands Remind Me

Open hands remind me that I am deserving of goodness. I am worthy, willing and capable. I refuse to let past rejection, fears, insecurities and previous losses stop me from being ready to receive this time. I value living life fully and I will look for moments to cherish and love.

Open hands remind me that if I give freedom to goodness to land in my life, then I also give freedom to see those same gifts fly away. In their own time. I can't not control one and then try to control the other. An airport cannot choose to only accept arrivals and not departures; there are valid times for travel in both directions. I cannot force people to stay here any longer than I can force time to stand still. I cannot manipulate, coerce, charm or trap gifts to last forever.

And should I ever be tempted to close my hand around something, I inevitably have just closed my hand to other gifts as well. Ironic, that the very gesture of trying to keep one thing can be the gesture that prevents other good things.

Sometimes we're so focused on refusing to let go of one thing that we miss the other opportunities. We hold so tight that we suffocate the very breath that we never wanted to lose. With tight hands we squish the bug we were trying to save, melt the chocolate we wanted for later, or find fingernail marks in our skin because we clenched too hard. That which we wanted to keep, we lost anyhow. And now our hands are just messy and sore.

Open hands remind me to engage, to not give up, to expect, to hope and to cherish. They teach me to let go, to unclench, to find peace. They offer me moments of joy and loss, inviting me to find contentment in both.

My Open Hands Blessings

My open hands invite me to embrace, hug and cherish the people in my life now.

My open hands remind me to feel grateful for those relationships even when they have flown away.

My open hands provide me a visual promise that I anticipate a future filled with more love.

This Thanksgiving, I hold my hands open. Grateful for the blessings. Those blessings that I have now, the ones I have had and those that are still yet to come.

Happy Thanksgiving, friends.

Tornado still takes heavy toll on Joplin, six months later (Reuters)

JOPLIN, Mo (Reuters) ? New houses, stores and office buildings are popping up from a tornado's ruins, but Rachael Lasley can only see the emptiness.

"I've lived my whole life here and it's not like Joplin anymore," Lasley, 36, said as she shielded her face from a cold wind whipping around a trailer park that is her temporary home. "My childhood memories are gone -- my elementary school, the playground, restaurants."

Joplin, Missouri on Tuesday observes the sixth-month anniversary of the EF-5 tornado May 22 that killed 161 people and destroyed some 900 buildings. The city is sponsoring a memorial service to honor victims and thank hundreds of volunteers who helped clean up the city.

While many in Joplin strike an upbeat tone about recovery, people who lost homes and loved ones still struggle mightily with their emotions and the upheaval in their lives.

Thousands of residents take part in state-sponsored counseling programs, including about one-third of the 7,700 public school students, officials said.

Stresses caused by the tornado, such as cramped or shared living space and financial hardships, have contributed to a 30 percent jump in cases of domestic violence and child abuse since the tornado, compared to a year ago, social service agencies report.

The mental health community is reaching out with billboards that read "Don't Let One Disaster Lead to Another."

Many families have moved multiple times since the tornado.

Christina Lackey, her husband and two small children stayed in a relative's living room, then a hotel and now rent a house outside town while their house is rebuilt. But they worry that ongoing construction delays will prevent them from moving before insurance stops covering their rent in March.

"It's real frustrating because it's going to take so long to get our lives put back together," Lackey said.

She said their 3 1/2 year old daughter still has scary memories of the tornado. On the 4th of July, for instance, fireworks "freaked her out," Lackey said.

Lisa Orem, director of special services for Joplin schools, said even children who did not lose a home in the tornado are shaken by the loss of places they knew so well.

Dannielle Robertson copes with the loss of her home and her mother, Vicki Robertson, 66, who died when the tornado slammed into her duplex. Robertson lives in what residents call "FEMAville," a barracks-like modular home park in a flat, open space in the northern part of Joplin. Homes were built by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The park has been the scene of several meth lab busts and violent crimes, Robertson said. She is trying to move but rental property is scarce and rent is rising out of the price range of a lot of people, she said.

Only recently, Robertson said, has she been able to drive through once-familiar parts of Joplin without crying. "To see those vast miles of empty space, it's so sad," she said.

Even new buildings are reminders of that awful day. Michael Madl lost a friend, Charlie Gaudsmith, 21, when the tornado tore through Wal-Mart while he was shopping. The new Wal-Mart opened earlier this month.

"I'd like to go there, but emotionally I don't think I could," Robertson said. He has found strength since the tornado by volunteering much of his time helping pack donated supplies for victims.

One of the most wrenching deaths that day occurred when the tornado pulled 18-year-old Will Norton out of the sunroof of his destroyed SUV two blocks from his home. His father, Mark Norton, was in the passenger seat but survived.

The Nortons were returning from high school graduation ceremonies when the tornado hit. Will Norton is talked about often, said a friend, Emma Cox. He was a popular kid, but never into cliques, she said.

"He had a Halloween party and invited everybody," Cox said.

Mark Norton said he has taken solace in the kind things people have said about Will, including one woman who said her introverted son decided to be more outgoing and involved in his first year of college because of Will's death.

"He realized life can be short and you can't waste years," Norton said.

The memorial service Tuesday is planned in Cunningham Park, where 161 trees will eventually be planted in memory of each tornado victim. Relatives of all victims have been invited to the service.

Robertson said the tree for each victim will be a symbol of renewal.

"It's part of the rebuilding of Joplin," she said. "A tree will be standing. That's important."

We worry about, but don't budget for, holidays

Charles Rex Arbogast / AP

Very few shoppers set a strict holiday budget, according to a new survey.

By Allison Linn

Given the state of the economy, it comes as no surprise that many Americans are worried about how they?ll be able to pay for all their holiday expenses.

The trouble is, most of us don?t seem to be doing much to plan for it.

A new survey from the National Endowment for Financial Education finds that just 31 percent of consumers plan to set a budget this holiday season. That?s only slightly more than last year, when 27 percent said they were making a budget.

The vast majority said they weren?t going to set a holiday spending budget. Still, only 10 percent said they often spend more than they want to. That?s about the same as last year.

The wealthier the household, the less likely they were to set a budget.

Half of the people NEFE surveyed said they were more worried about being able to afford holiday expenses than they were five years ago. Nearly 4 in 10 are just as concerned about holiday spending as they were five years ago.

Harris Interactive conducted the survey of about 2,800 adults earlier this month on NEFE?s behalf.

Faster-than-light claims face new challenge

Scientists studying the same neutrino particles that colleagues say appear to have traveled faster than light rejected the startling finding this weekend, saying their tests had shown it must be wrong.

The September announcement of the faster-than-light finding, backed up last week after new studies, caused a furor in the scientific world, as it seemed to suggest that Albert Einstein's ideas on relativity, and much of modern physics, were based on a mistaken premise.

The first team, collaborating on the OPERA experiment at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory south of Rome, said they recorded neutrinos beamed to them from the CERN research center in Switzerland as arriving 60 nanoseconds before light would have done.

But colleagues involved in ICARUS, another experiment at Gran Sasso, now argues that their measurements of the neutrinos energy on arrival contradict that reading.

In a paper posted Saturday on the same ArXiv preprint website as the OPERA results, the ICARUS team says their findings "refute a superluminal [faster than light] interpretation of the OPERA result."

They argue, on the basis of recently published studies by two top U.S. physicists, that the neutrinos pumped down from CERN should have lost most of their energy if they had traveled at even a tiny fraction faster than light.

But in fact, the ICARUS scientists say, the neutrino beam as tested in their equipment registered an energy spectrum fully corresponding with what it should be for particles traveling at the speed of light and no more.

Physicist Tomasso Dorigo, who works at CERN as well as Fermilab near Chicago, said in a post on the website Scientific Blogging that the ICARUS paper was "very simple and definitive."

He said the paper asserted "that the difference between the speed of neutrinos and the speed of light cannot be as large as that seen by OPERA, and is certainly smaller than that by three orders of magnitude, and compatible with zero."

Under Einstein's 1905 theory of special relativity, nothing can be accelerated to a speed faster than light. That idea lies at the heart of all current science of the cosmos and of how the vast variety of particles that make it up behave.

There was widespread skepticism when the OPERA findings were first revealed, and even the leaders of the experiment insisted that they were not announcing a discovery but simply recording measurements they had made and carefully checked.

Last wee, the OPERA researchers said a new experiment with shorter neutrino beams from CERN and much larger gaps between them had produced the same result. Independent scientists said, however, this was not conclusive.

Other experiments are being prepared ? at Fermilab and at the KEK laboratory in Japan ? to try to replicate OPERA's findings. Only confirmation from one of these would open the way for a full scientific discovery to be declared.

(AP) ? An Egyptian morgue official says the death toll has climbed to 35 during the third straight day of violence that has turned into the most sustained challenge yet to the rule of Egypt's military.

Most of the deaths were in the area around Cairo's central Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the uprising that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak in February.

On Monday, young activists demanding the military hand over power to a civilian government skirmished with black-clad police, hurling stones and firebombs and throwing back the tear gas canisters being fired by police into the square.

The official said 20 people had been killed Monday. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

CAIRO (AP) ? Security forces fired tear gas and clashed Monday with several thousand protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square in the third straight day of violence that has killed at least 22 people and has turned into the most sustained challenge yet to the rule of Egypt's military.

Throughout the day, young activists demanding the military hand over power to a civilian government skirmished with black-clad police, hurling stones and firebombs and throwing back the tear gas canisters being fired by police in to the square, which was the epicenter of the protest movement that ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

The night before saw an escalation of the fighting as police launched a heavy assault that tried and failed to clear protesters from the square. In a show of the ferocity of the assault, the death toll quadrupled from Sunday evening until Monday morning. During the overnight clashes, police hit a makeshift field clinic operated by protesters in the square, forcing them to evacuate bloodied wounded to a nearby mosque.

The eruption of violence, which began Saturday, reflects the frustration and confusion that has mired Egypt's revolution since Mubarak fell in February and the military stepped into power.

It comes only a week before Egypt is to begin the first post-Mubarak parliamentary elections, which many have hoped would be a significant landmark in a transition to democracy. Instead, it has been clouded by anger at the military's top body, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which will continue to rule as head of state even after the vote. Activists accuse the generals of acting increasingly in the same autocratic way as Mubarak's regime and seeking to cling to power.

The military says it will only hand over power after presidential elections, which it has vaguely said will be held in late 2012 or early 2013. The protesters are demanding an immediate move to civilian rule.

The Health Ministry said Monday that at least 22 people have been killed since the violence began Saturday ? a jump from the toll of five dead around nightfall Sunday.

The violence looks set to intensify with some of the protesters on Monday lobbing firebombs at the police.

"We must use force against force. We cannot just throw stones at them," said Hassan Mohammed, a protester in his 20s.

"Do you expect us to meet blood with kindness?" asked a bearded teenager climbing a tree with a firebomb in hand. "We will burn it under their feet," he added as he went on to use expletive against the Supreme Council's head, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi.

Doctors at field hospitals set up in the square spoke of scores of protesters arriving with breathing and eye problems and wounds to the face from what they said was the excessive use of tear gas and rubber bullets.

Mohammed Mustafa, one of the doctors, said his field hospital was treating an average of 80 cases per hour and that many of the wounded did not want to be taken to hospital in ambulances because they feared arrest.

The protesters' suspicions about the military were fed by a proposal issued by the military-appointed Cabinet last week that would shield the armed forces from any civilian oversight and give the generals veto power over legislation dealing with military affairs.

But other concerns are also feeding the tensions on the street. Many Egyptians are anxious about what the impending elections will bring. Specifically they worry that stalwarts of Mubarak's ruling party could win a significant number of seats in the next parliament because the military did not ban them from running for public office as requested by activists.

The military's failure to issue such a ban has fed widely held suspicion that the generals are reluctant to dismantle the old regime, partly out of loyalty to Mubarak, their longtime mentor.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces issued a statement, read on state TV Sunday night, saying it does not intend to "extend the transitional period and will not permit by any means hindering the process of democratic transition."

The military-backed Cabinet said the elections due to start on Nov. 28 will go ahead as scheduled.

Activists have been holding occasional protests against the military in Tahrir for months, and some have seen crackdowns by the military or police.

But this weekend's violence was the most sustained fighting between the two sides. It began when security forces stormed a sit-in at Tahrir staged by several hundred protesters wounded in clashes during the 18-day uprising in January and February and frustrated by the slow pace of bringing those responsible to justice.

The pressures of having a relationship in the public eye can be daunting for many celebrity couples, but some actually enjoy it.

Access Hollywood caught up with Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley - who have been married for almost four years - backstage at the American Music Awards on Sunday, where the happy couple shared their secrets to successful marriage in the Hollywood spotlight.

"It's not easy, but it is ideal if we both have our own thing, our own passions, our own focus on our careers. We can kind of come back to each other and there's this fire there," the 32-year-old actress told Access Hollywood guest correspondent Tim Vincent backstage at the AMAs.

"We're happy because we have these great careers that we're happy with. That happiness is infectious - it sort of bleeds into everything," Katherine continued.

Josh, 31, said their busy lives helps to keep their relationship healthy.

"There are some points of it when it actually can be a little bit easier because if I was home for longer than three or four weeks at a time, I don't think she could put up with me honestly. I think I'd be out of here," the singer/songwriter explained. "I think it works for us for sure, because absence does actually make the heart grow fonder if it's not for too long. It's like new for the first couple days back every time I come home and it's really sweet."

The couple, who adopted daughter Naleigh - almost 3 - in 2009, said their public careers are also a source of bonding.

"Because you're in the same business, you understand. Even though my business is different, being in music and her being an actress, you understand what kind of day she's been through, if it's grueling," Josh added. "You have things to talk about."

NBA Lockout Update: More Legal Stuff and PR Warfare - Bright Side ...

Why are lawyers so dang smart?(AP Photo/Jim Mone, File)

Evidently the dockets in Minnesota are less cramped than those in New York and California. On Monday, the players consolidated all of their lawsuits in the big MN.

The sides have not communicated since the talks fell apart and the players union disbanded Nov. 14.

Yet that hasn't stopped the suits from sniping at one another from afar, which of course does little but increase the rancor of the two sides (kind of the opposite of illustrating the hope for an agreement, no?)? The whole article from USA Today can be found here.? But here's a short summary along with some witty commentary:

?

Star-divide

Rick Buchanan, NBA Executive Vice President and General Counsel (Savagely):

?

"We assume that Mr. Boies was not happy with either the reassignment of the case from Oakland to San Francisco or the fact that the new judge scheduled the first conference for March 2012...This is consistent with Mr. Boies' inappropriate shopping for a forum that he can only hope will be friendlier to his baseless legal claims."

Ouch, Rick but you only sound like an angry man forced to do more paperwork.

David Boies
(Hurt)

"Talking it through ? we thought things would move faster in Minnesota. The docket is less congested there."

Do you all hear me? I want to resolve this-for the fans. Quickly!

And further:

"They've made pretty clear they (the league) have no interest in talking to us. ? I thought this was a case we ought to try and resolve"

Can't we all just get along?

David Boies (Lawyer's humor)

?"One of the good things about lawsuits: I know I'm going to hear from them in about three weeks," (meaning the 21 days the league has to respond to the filing.)

Bahahaahahahahaha...Attaboy, Davie, yer killin' me over here!

And lastly, to prove that he and his clients are the good guys, check this one out:

"Eventually, people come to the realization that litigation is not the best way to resolve most disputes...Most disputes ought to be settled. Trying a lawsuit is fun to lawyers. It's our form of competition. But it's not good for the system. It's generally not good for client, if there's an alternative...This was the last resort for players."

Last resort for the players? Did they not have a chance to accept an offer before all of this?

And if you think there was a PR battle before, the one in which the object was to win the hearts and minds of us fans, just you wait, my friends. Mr. Boies is playing victim here, and if we aren't careful we could fall for it. It takes two to rumble, and Boies wins even if he loses. Anyone know his hourly rate?

Romney picks up important New Hampshire endorsement (Reuters)

LITTLETON, New Hampshire (Reuters) ? Republican Mitt Romney, looking to close the deal in the early primary state of New Hampshire, picked up an important endorsement on Sunday from U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte.

Ayotte was elected in 2010 from New Hampshire as part of big Republican gains in Congress, and is the top Republican elected official in the state. Her campaign had support from, among others, former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Romney has won nearly every major Republican endorsement in New Hampshire so far, and has led in Republican polls in the state by a wide margin for almost two years.

On Friday, though, a survey by Magellan Strategies showed former House Speaker Newt Gingrich drawing within two percentage points of Romney.

New Hampshire holds its 2012 Republican primary election on January 10. The vote is regarded as one that Romney must not just win, but win convincingly.

The former Massachusetts governor has stepped up his campaigning in the state, where he owns a house. On Sunday he and Ayotte appeared at a rally in Nashua, her home town.

Ayotte was one of Palin's "Mama Grizzlies" in 2010, and is a former state attorney general.

In a statement, Ayotte cited Romney's experience as a businessman and governor, and his "excellent presidential debate performances" in her decision to endorse him.

Romney has also been endorsed by major New Hampshire figures like former Republican governor John Sununu and former U.S. Senator Judd Gregg.

Satellite data can help protect bluefin tuna

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2011) ? A new model developed by scientists of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) allows the potential presence of bluefin tuna to be tracked through daily updated maps, helping to protect endangered stocks and fight illegal fishing. The model, based on satellite remote sensing data, provides for the first time an overall view of the preferred bluefin tuna habitats in the Mediterranean Sea, as well as their changes over time. Satellite-based habitat mapping can help identify more precisely areas to be inspected or to be closed for fisheries and it can also help refine estimates of fish stocks, thus contributing to a more effective fisheries management.

European Commissioner for Research and Innovation, M?ire Geoghegan-Quinn, said: "This model will help to ensure sustainable management of bluefin tuna, actively contributing to two of the most pressing challenges for the future: food security and protection of the environment. Another good example of how science and research provide support to European Union policies."

European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Maria Damanaki, said"Responsible fisheries management decisions that ensure the sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources and the availability of fish for future generations worldwide rely on good science. New findings, like the JRC's new model, will help us greatly in our efforts to protect bluefin tuna and fight illegal fishing practices."

The JRC habitat model allows the creation of near real-time maps of feeding and spawning potential bluefin habitats in the Mediterranean Sea, as well as habitat maps over a decade. The novelty of this model is the use of satellite data on the concentration of chlorophyll on the sea surface, as well as temperature, to track specific oceanographic features, which play a key role on the fish distribution.

The results achieved through the model clearly highlighted that bluefin tuna feeding and spawning is concentrated in some recurrent locations. Areas most frequently chosen for nutrition are on the northern side of the Mediterranean. Reproduction starts in May in the eastern part of the Mediterranean and ends in July in the western part.

However, the results also displayed a strong seasonality in habitat size and locations, as well as high year-to-year variations for the potential spawning habitat depending on regional weather conditions. This variability is key to evaluating the pertinence of Marine Protected Areas (or sensitive areas) for this species.

Bluefin tuna is a commercial fish of high market value which has been strongly overexploited for 15 years, especially in the Mediterranean Sea. The largest stock of adults which reproduce in the Mediterranean Sea is now at its lowest on record, around 40% of late 1950s' level.

In the past years the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) has set lower quotas, established a restricted fishing period and recommended measures to enforce fisheries control. However, there is a need to increase the knowledge about spawning grounds for exploring additional management measures.

The implementation of a habitat-guided management could help identify spawning areas to be partially closed to fishing, thus protecting the spawners and ensuring adequate repopulation. Moreover, by restricting authorised fishing areas, control operations can be better targeted to fight illegal fishing, which is estimated to account for more than one-third of total catches in recent years.

The JRC habitat model can be adapted to other species of commercial interest. Potential habitat maps of fish at basin scale could help to produce more reliable assessments of fish stocks and can contribute to the planning of more efficient and sustainable use of limited maritime space.
