Family Day disappoints students yet again | The Bray Online
In all of my time here at Southern Arkansas University I have never seen anything quite as absurd as ?Family Day.? It is apparently one of SAU?s big events here on campus which, in all reality, it is big if you compare it to Homecoming Day and the Spring Concert.
Family Day was made for students to see their families, who they may not otherwise see until Thanksgiving or Christmas break, but it?s such a waste of time. People spend time decorating beds for the Residence Hall Association?s Bed Race, coming up with strategies for the Greek Canoe race and setting up tables for the Organization Fair just for one day.
What is the point of racing highly decorated beds down the street with some poor soul hanging on for dear life? It?s entertaining when they crash, but after doing all that work what is the point of just destroying the bed in the race. The winning hall gets a trophy. A trophy? Really, SAU?! All we can give them is a trophy, no small scholarship or anything for the people running or even the rider? And not even a trophy for them, the trophy is for the entire residence hall. Shouldn?t the students who end up with a few bumps and bruises that last all weekend and then some get something for their time and effort?
Then we sit around or walk around a dry and stinky organization fair. I don?t know whose idea it was to have an organization fair at the Duck Pond, but I think that they should at least try to re-think that. Who really wants to eat food around smelly ducks? I don?t know about everyone else, but I don?t. So I?m supposed to stand around eating stale popcorn while watching people race around the pond for an engraved oar. Quite frankly I must say that Family Day prizes aren?t worth much.
Later in the day we take our families to the football game where some students pile themselves into the stands to watch the Muleriders lose. I?ve been to a good number of football games here over the past three years and I think that they won maybe four games. We?re expected to have school spirit and show our families a good time, but what?s good about destroyed beds, smelly ducks and a losing football team?
I?m not a big football fan, but I would expect that the team of any type of sport would play like they love it. Well that or at least play like their Mom or someone they care about is watching. So Mulerider Football team if you are playing like someone you care about is watching then I feel so sorry for them.
Sure students get in free to the games, but not even free admission is worth going to watch the team lose especially if you are bringing your family and they have to pay. When my sister visited for one Family Day I was embarrassed that she had to pay to watch the team lose.
I get that Family Day is about spending time with your family and friends, but how about something that is actually enjoyable. Something that provides a good time to all. More than likely less than half of the campus actually participates in Family Day because the other half ditched to go home and do something fun.
I personally think that Family Day is nothing but an epic failure. It?s supposed to be a fun interactive visit with students and their families, but all I see are people walking around at the same events every year for a few hours to watch a notoriously losing team.

Huntsman moves campaign to New Hampshire (AP)
WASHINGTON ? Jon Huntsman is moving his presidential campaign headquarters from Florida to New Hampshire.
The former Utah governor will close his headquarters in Orlando, Fla., and open a new one in Manchester, N.H. New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary has been central to Huntsman's campaign from the beginning, but he initially planned also to campaign hard in two other early states of South Carolina and Florida. The move to Manchester acknowledges his campaign has struggled so far and likely can't survive a loss in New Hampshire.
Huntsman is trailing far behind his Republican rivals in national polls.

St. Thomas University students will have to dig deep into their pockets if they want to take part in intramural sports this school year.
The University of New Brunswick is charging STU students $50 a semester for a recreation pass to play intramural sports. And it will cost an additional $100 to play intramural hockey.
?This is outrageous,? said Scott Saunders, a fourth-year student at STU. ?I?ve spent all my money on tuition and books so I couldn?t afford it.?
Until this year, St. Thomas students could join UNB intramural programs for free. However, with the opening of the Currie Center, the university?s state-of-the-art athletics building, that agreement has changed.
Mike Eagles, STU athletic director, confirmed UNB has added the fees for STU students to help pay for the Currie Center.
The Currie Centre offers two full-size recreation gymnasiums, a strength and cardio centre, conference and meeting rooms and a human performance laboratory.
This all cost UNB a hefty $62 million. So far the university has only paid for 80 per cent of that.
UNB students had their tuition hiked $150 to help pay off the deficit. The fee covers intramurals, clubs, the pool and other activities at the Currie Center.
?The St. Thomas administration was approached with the same deal UNB students received,? said Tom White, the intramural sports co-ordinator at UNB. ?It didn?t really seem fair to charge the UNB students to use the facility and not the STU students.?
But St. Thomas rejected the $150 tuition increase, leaving students out of the loop for intramural sports.
?Even if I had the money, I don?t think I would have paid it,? Saunders said. ?I didn?t know we were playing intramural hockey in the Currie Center this year.?
In the meantime, STU?s athletic department is taking steps so students don?t have to go to UNB to pay the fee, while house representatives are trying to set up their own intramurals for STU students.
?We?re starting a four-on-four basketball league,? said Harrington Hall sports rep Bront? James. ?It?s going to be a 10 week program, with the last three weeks being championships. It?s free for students and I think it will be fun if you want to go out.?

Signs of China slowdown add to dim global outlook (AP)
SHANGHAI ? Signs that powerhouse China is slowing have spooked global markets and sharpened fears that the world economy will not escape another recession.
The dramatic stock market fallout from one small, preliminary survey of Chinese manufacturers far exceeded the data's importance, analysts said Friday. The world's No. 2 economy is slowing, as expected, but growth will remain relatively strong, they say.
If nothing else, the market rout that began Thursday and continued Friday reflects China's growing importance for world growth, said Xianfang Ren, chief China economist for IHS Global Insight.
A preliminary reading of HSBC's index of manufacturing for September, released about a week before the final survey is due, was at a two-month low of 49.4 and like August's reading of 49.9 is under 50 ? indicating that activity is contracting. An official manufacturing index that surveys a bigger number of companies is also due about the end of September.
The HSBC survey and weak indicators from other major economies prompted panicked selling by global investors afraid that governments hamstrung by debt crises, inflation and unemployment may be unable to avert a recession.
But the HSBC survey is only a monthly snapshot, ill-suited to indicate long-term trends, said Ren.
It also is heavily weighted toward exporters, who are bound to be feeling cautious given the current global outlook but is not a reliable measure of the broader economy, said CLSA analyst Andy Rothman.
"If you look at other measures of what's happening in China ... everything is cooling down, but not dramatically, and there's still strong growth," Rothman said. Most forecasters pick economic growth of above 9 percent this year and between 8.5 percent and 9 percent next year.
As one of the few big economies that is expanding at a rapid clip, China's role in powering world growth is significant. That's especially so for nations such as Australia that are heavily dependent on China's voracious demand for the minerals they export and for export reliant economies in Asia including Singapore, Taiwan and Japan. The Conference Board forecasts China to account for about a third of the increase in global GDP this year.
Yet despite China's rising power, experts say its economy is still not big or strong enough to fully compensate for meltdowns elsewhere, since its own investment and spending is only one-sixth that of the European Union and United States.
"From a global perspective, China's domestic demand is still way too small to offset the impact of a recession" in Europe and the U.S., Deutsche Bank economist Ma Jun said in a report.
To make up for a 3 percentage point drop in growth in those economies, China would have to grow by 18 percent this year, he says.
"This is mission impossible."
Some worry that China's economic planners in their zeal to reduce inflation from near three-year highs could overshoot by cooling the economy too much. August's inflation figure of 6.2 percent, down from 6.5 percent in July, suggests that Beijing's inflation battle may be yielding results that would allow it greater leeway for policies aimed at keeping growth on track.
A drop in global demand for China's exports could also wallop its economy, as it did in 2008, though domestic factors such as consumer spending and investment in infrastructure are increasingly driving growth.
Most economists still downplay any risk of a so-called "hard landing" in China that would darken the global outlook.
Such fears are "unwarranted," said HSBC's own economist Hongbin Qu. "Resilient domestic demand is sufficient to support around 8.5 percent to 9 percent growth in the coming quarters."
China's advantages over other major economies include its relatively low level of debt despite growing worries over local government borrowing, its cash-rich corporate sector and pent-up demand among its newly affluent consumers.
Massive stimulus spending launched in response to the 2008 global crisis is still washing through the economy, driving sales for both heavy industries like steel and cement, and light ones such as appliances, clothing and home furnishings.
"Chinese companies are making money and the private consumption is increasing. If we assume government spending remains at the current level, the economy will continue to grow," said Peng Yunliang, a strategist with Shanghai Securities.
Earlier this week, the International Monetary Fund cut its growth forecast for China this year, but only by one tenth of a percentage point to 9.5 percent.
In revising its outlook for China, the IMF reiterated its advice to Beijing to do more to spur consumer demand, in part by improving social services to help relieve pressures on families to save disproportionate amounts of their income to cover their medical, education and retirement needs.

UK High Court delays Traveler eviction ruling (AP)
LONDON ? A decade-long battle between British authorities and a community of Irish Travelers who have been living illegally on a former scrapyard must be brought to an end, a judge said Friday, but acknowledged the legal wrangling would drag on for days.
Justice Anthony Edwards-Stuart told the High Court he would rule Monday on a temporary injunction which is preventing a local authority from clearing the Dale Farm site, 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of London.
The judge also confirmed that the Travelers had launched a new legal challenge to prevent their eviction, which will go to court next week.
The local authority says the operation has already cost 8 million pounds ($13 million), and the total expense could reach 18 million pounds ($28 million).
"These matters have got to be put to bed sooner and not later," Edwards-Stuart said during the High Court hearing.
There are estimated to be between 15,000 and 30,000 Irish Travelers in Britain, where they are recognized as a distinct ethnic minority by the government.
Over the past few decades laws limiting unauthorized camping, economic changes and a desire to see their children educated led many to settle down ? sometimes legally, on land provided by the government, and sometimes on unauthorized plots.
Officials say the long simmering dispute between authorities and residents at Dale Farm relates to a a simple planning issue ? the 86 families own the land, but lack permission to pitch homes on it.
But the Travelers say they are facing discrimination ? the latest chapter in a centuries-old story of mistrust between nomads and British society.
The Travelers are a traditionally nomadic group similar to, but ethnically distinct from, Gypsies or Roma people. Their plight has drawn concern from the United Nations and support from celebrities including actress Vanessa Redgrave.
The conflict over the settlement has raged since 2001, when Travelers bought and settled on a former scrapyard next to a legal Travelers' site. The local authority waged a long legal battle to remove them, which it finally won last month.
Eviction was due to begin earlier this week and brought a tense standoff, with Travelers and their supporters chaining themselves to the gates of their camp as bailiffs moved in to enforce the eviction order.
On Monday the Travelers won a last-minute reprieve when a judge prevented bailiffs from removing any structures, including cars and mobile homes, from their settlement before Friday's hearing.
Edwards-Stuart said he would make a final ruling on whether or not to overturn that injunction on Monday, and hear other legal attempts to halt the evictions next week.
He said the evictions would ultimately be carried out, but that the residents were "entitled to be treated with dignity."
The Travelers have said they may agree to move out if they are given time to find another place to live.
Traveler spokeswoman Kathleen McCarthy said the judge had "listened to both sides of the situation," and she was happy about the weekend reprieve.
"I know it mightn't be a lot, but for us it's an extra few days being home, where our children can sleep," she said.
Local authority leader Tony Ball said he looked forward to the judge's ruling Monday.
"After 10 years, if it means just a few more days, then it's worth it," he said. "The public, the Travelers and the council need an end to this."

Twenty years ago, Seattle was a quiet Northwestern city, notable for its timber and aviation industries as well as its starring role in the 1962 World?s Fair, where it unveiled the iconic Space Needle. But not much happened in the intervening decades to capture the nation?s imagination ? or the interest of travelers.
Then grunge happened. The emergence of the band Nirvana, and its angry punk-pop album ?Nevermind,? 20 years ago this month changed the city as a destination.

In 1991, Seattle drew 6.1 million visitors who spent $1.6 billion. Since then, tourism has grown steadily, reaching 9.3 million visitors and $5.5 billion in spending last year. While grunge threw the spotlight on Seattle, the attention only grew as coffee culture and movies like "Sleepless in Seattle" and "Singles" gave the city color it didn?t have before, says David Blandford, vice president of communications for Seattle?s Convention and Visitors Bureau.
?When you look at the '90s and what came from some of those phenomena,? Blandford says, ?people began to understand what it was like to live here and visit.?
For several years, though, local politicians fought the thriving music scene through ordinances, afraid that its aggressive roots would tarnish efforts to portray Seattle as a world-class destination. ??The city leadership really didn?t like [grunge],? says James Keblas, director of Seattle?s office of film and music.
Anti-establishment residents weren?t clamoring for grunge to become a part of Seattle?s image, either. ?When grunge exploded, people really turned away from it here,? Keblas says. ??It?s taken a while for Seattle to own that identity and be proud of it and to capitalize on it in interesting ways.?
The Experience Music Project, which opened in 2000, is featuring an exhibit on Nirvana through April 2013.
That slow embrace is now a tight grip, making the city?s musical heritage a big part of any visit. The Experience Music Project, which opened in 2000 and has become a popular Seattle attraction, is named after one of Seattle native Jimi Hendrix?s bands. The pop music museum is marking the 20th anniversary of ?Nevermind? with a yearlong exhibition featuring Nirvana memorabilia and photography.
In 2005, the city introduced maps pinpointing historic music sites, including the Black Dog Forge, a blacksmithing studio where the bands Pearl Jam and Soundgarden rehearsed. Also on the maps are sites that recall the city?s musical history pre-grunge, like the Trianon Ballroom, which hosted jazz-era orchestras led by Vic Meyer and Gay Jones and the Black & Tan Club, a jazz club where Ray Charles, Charlie Parker and Duke Ellington performed.

The city?s musical legacy has become such an important part of luring tourists that the downtown boutique Hotel Max?decorated the doors on one floor with iconic images of grunge bands taken by local photographer Charles Peterson.
But if there?s a true benchmark of Seattle?s transformation into a conventional tourist destination, it?s the Hard Rock Caf? that opened in February 2010. The restaurant replaced a coin-operated peep show steps away from Pike Place Market. True to the city?s ethos of activism and originality, though, this franchise of the global chain features reclaimed wood and memorabilia from local bands and performers.
Seattle hasn?t just capitalized on its musical heritage in the past decade; it has also taken advantage of new cruise terminals. In 1999, the city?s port welcomed just 6,600 cruise passengers. In 2010, that number had reached 931,000, thanks to two new terminals, one opened in 1999 and the other in 2009. Each time a homeport ship docks, it contributes $1.9 million to the local economy, according to the Port of Seattle.
The city also has more to offer those visitors than it did 10-plus years ago. Randy Hurlow, vice president of communications and marketing for the Downtown Seattle Association, says a ?renaissance? began in the heart of the city starting in the early 1990s, which grew with an influx of money from employees at companies like Microsoft and Amazon.com. ?It started to snowball,? says Hurlow. Benaroya Hall, home to the Seattle Symphony, opened in 1998. That same year, the city?s voters approved an initiative to spend $290 million on the Seattle?s libraries; in 2004, the flagship library, formerly a concrete box, reopened as a steel-and-glass architectural marvel. Four years ago, the Seattle Art Museum opened a free waterfront sculpture park featuring works by Alexander Calder and Louise Bourgeois.
Add to that a downtown retail district that includes shops like Nike Town, Tiffany & Co. and Michael Kors as well as restaurants that are competitive with the best haunts in San Francisco, Chicago and New York, and the Seattle of 2011 might bear little resemblance to that of the grunge era.
But Hurlow isn?t worried that Seattle has lost the character that made it famous.
?I think we have some of the grittiness that cities are known for,? he says. ?It is still there and I don?t know if we ever want that to completely go away.?
