online dating - Online Dating Is The Most Practical Way Of ...

Youth is all about technology, internet, gaming, partying, hanging out with friends, bunking colleges, street fighting and a lot more. There is no limit of age to having fun and amusement. Internet has become an important part of the youth's life. It is present everywhere in their laptops, cell phones, computers, tablets, cars and every other possible places. Not to blame, as internet has made the life of humans a lot better. Everything from shopping, booking tickets, socialising and working is possible through internet. Even relationships are now being formed through online dating. Although dating is just an initial step towards future relationships, it is definitely not a bad start.

Any individual, searching for a life partner, friend or a date, can hook up online and find his/her appropriate match. Internet is not a difficult thing for young people. It is easily accessible and also the fastest way of searching the perfect match. Online dating is accompanied with a lot of advantages. People getting into a relationship for the first time can get the opportunity to know each other well. They get a lot of time to understand each other and know about their likes, dislikes, common hobbies, passion and every minute detail they are ready to disclose.

Moreover, it is not necessary that every date ends up in a lifetime commitment or long lasting relationship. The individuals may also end up being good friends in real life. It is also not possible that they meet each other or make commitments within a very short span of time. Sometimes, it may also take years for people to unite and meet. To hook up online is pretty easy; everyone would long for it. However, what takes time is to convert that into a real life relation.

When it is about the entire life, it becomes very important that the couple knows every single person linked to each other in one way or the other such as friends, cousins, relatives, elders, etc. Social networking through internet makes all such things possible too. People start relying on various web portals for their life partners too. However, the most essential term in every such new technology or route is ?trust'. In the absence of trust on each other, it is extremely difficult for any person to get into a lifelong relationship. In this new generation of speed and technology, no one would be ready to wait for one's partner like in old days. Hookup Fun gives everyone an excellent platform to start a fresh new relationship with their perfect partners!

Break down the wall you put up around yourself and change your love life for the better. Choose online dating and get hooked up!

Van Marwijk resigns as Netherlands coach

The Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) has announced that Bert van Marwijk has stepped down as coach of the Netherlands national team.

The 60-year-old's position had been under threat after Oranje crashed out of Euro 2012 at the group stage with three defeats from three matches.
He also faced strong criticism from players and media alike and reportedly lost control of the dressing room after rebellion led by vice-captain Rafael van der Vaart.

After a meeting between Van Marwijk and the KNVB, both parties decided that the coach's contract, which was due to expire in 2016, would be terminated with immediate effect.

"We are grateful to Van Marwijk," KNVB director Bert van Oostveen said. "He performed exceptionally well at the 2010 World Cup and in getting us to the top of the Fifa World Ranking.

"Of course it is sad to part company with him, but we must be realistic."

Van Marwijk took charge of Netherlands in 2008, replacing Marco van Basten, and guided Oranje to a runners-up finish at the World Cup in South Africa.

He also led the Dutch side to an impressive campaign in the Euro 2012 qualifiers, winning nine out of 10 matches, but in Poland and Ukraine they suffered defeats to Germany, Portugal and Denmark.

Google announces 'Save to Wallet' for offers and payment cards

Android Central

Google I/O has been jam packed full of new, and exciting Google software and technology. While the headline acts are no doubt the arrival of the Nexus 7 and Jelly Bean, there has been some pretty interesting stuff going on in the developer sessions. One such session, dedicated to Google Wallet, unveiled a new feature, called Save to Wallet. Initially for offers and payment cards, it is seen as the first step in opening up Google Wallet to a wider audience.

So, what's it all about. Taking offers first, the Save to Wallet API will allow consumers to save offers from a stores website, directly to their Google Wallet. Wallet will then remind you to take advantage of it before the coupon expires. The offers can then be applied in the store, either by showing the offer code in your Wallet, or by using the NFC capabilities on your smartphone. Pretty slick.

Adding the Save to Wallet button to an existing website requires little more than a piece of Javascript code. The benefits to retailers pretty much speak for themselves, but the consumer benefits are really nice too. By managing your offer coupons for you, Wallet will give you the notifications, to remind you to use them. After all, we all want to save some money, right?

The Save to Wallet API also applies to payment cards as well. It works pretty similarly to offers, and allows payment card providers the ability to provide the same button on their website, and offer a seamless way to enter your card into your Google Wallet.

Naturally, since we're dealing with potentially sensitive data here, the API isn't just opened up to anyone who wants it. It will be opened up to a limited number of users initially, in a closed beta. Anyone interested can register, but Google will only be releasing the API to approved partners. This applies to offers, as well as payment cards.

And, what about the future? As the slide here shows, Google are promising more, coming soon. It's a smart move, if they can make a go of it. Apple's Passbook is likely the beginnings of their own Wallet solution, and Windows Phone 8 has theirs on the way. Google's taking a good first step here into expanding the functionality of Wallet. What we need now, is greater adoption -- we'd like to use our phones to pay for stuff in Europe too, Google.

For your viewing convenience, we've embedded the Google Wallet session after the break.

Miami Heat Coach Pat Riley dishes on the next year

MIAMI?

? Offering atypical candor and forthright insight, Miami Heat President Pat Riley early Friday morning clarified several aspects of the team's offseason direction.

? Speaking in the wake of Thursday's NBA Draft, Riley touched on issues not previously addressed amid the team's championship celebration.

?? -- He said the team plans to guarantee the 2012-13 salary of backup center Dexter Pittman by Saturday's deadline.

? "He's going to do a lot of work and we're going to give him a good shot," Riley said. "Big guys, especially when you draft them late, it's a two- or three-year project."

??That could leave as many as three centers under guaranteed contract, including Joel Anthony and possibly Ronny Turiaf, who has a Saturday deadline to invoke his 2012-13 player option in advance of Sunday's start of free agency.

?? -- He said the team does not plan to use its "amnesty" clause this offseason, which would have enabled the team to avoid a luxury-tax payment with the release of a player under contract.

??That decision bodes well for the possibility of a return by Mike Miller, with Riley saying the 3-point specialist would first pursue an aggressive offseason rehabilitation program before considering back surgery.

??? "He has been examined," Riley said. "There hasn?t been any real prognosis. We are going to treat it and rehab it before the doctor makes a final decision. Mike is going to go through a summer of real rehabilitation."

?? -- He said he has no plans to step down in the wake of his latest championship, as some had speculated.

? "I hope it's just the beginning for me, in building this team. I hope this team has a long run," he said. "My job is to keep adding pieces to it."

?? -- He said the Heat already has specific players targeted for Sunday's start of free agency, without offering specifics.

? "We've got five or six guys earmarked," he said, "so we'll see how it goes."

?? He also said he would be open to consulting the team's stars about the Heat's free-agency direction.

?? "We definitely would run names by them," he said.

?? He indicated he is content with the tandem of Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole at point guard moving forward.

?? "We feel good with our point guard position, because we don't need a real prototypical point guard that needs the ball all the time," he said.

?? He also offered a hint that gives credence to potential Heat pursuit of Celtics free-agent guard Ray Allen.

?? "We want to find as much space on the floor with Chris and Dwyane and LeBron to operate," he said.

?? He said his staff already is in a back-to-work mode.

Branden R. Williams, Business Security Specialist ? Hospitality Still ...

With all the news and information we are pummeled with daily, it?s hard to ignore the significance of cyber security and its role in protecting enterprises and individuals. It?s even pretty easy to ignore until it happens to you. I have written and spoken about the challenges in the hospitality industry before, and they remain a big target for a few big reasons.

Photo by || UggBoy?UggGirl || PHOTO || WORLD || TRAVEL ||

Many hotels, even ones with a big-brand name on the facade, are owned and operated by individual companies and investors. Joe?s Hotel Group buys the building, hires the employees, and plugs into GiantHotelChain?s reservation and reward system. Many hotels are wide-reaching properties where everywhere you go you have an opportunity to perform a transaction (pay TV, internet, bar, minibar, restaurant, rentals, and excursions to name a few). Since you are on-property, you have the option to pay using the stored payment information on file which sets up a huge opportunity for bad things to happen. Some properties are completely standalone, and others are mini-chains of properties, all subjected to the whims of an underfunded IT department and aging hotel management systems. As an example, I checked into a prominent hotel Tuesday in Chicago and leaned over the counter to see a curses-based (i.e., text like a dumb terminal) hotel management interface.

Speaking of loyalty programs, many of these store a surprisingly large amount of information on their members, including payment information on-file. The major chains differ in how they protect this information, but in many cases, a simple username/password combination is all someone would need to start combing through a loyalty program database. Here?s where behavior-based detection really comes into play as someone using a valid credential doing ?valid? operations may not show up on the radar.

Another problem, which is not limited to hotels, is the limited number of point of sale systems and integrators that install them. If you know one particular grouping of hotels that uses a particular POS installed by a particular integrator, you can almost guarantee with certainty that if you compromise one property, you can compromise them all. Depending on how lazy the integrator is, you might even be able to compromise more of his customers just by looking on his website to see who he touts as customers. This problem is common among franchise communities and even verticals (if I compromise Restaurant 1, can I compromise Restaurant(s) n that run the same systems?). Hospitality environments aren?t necessarily IP-rich, but it certainly is a PII-rich environment with a number of options to access the information both on-prem and off.

If you are in this industry, how do you deal with this big target on your back? Especially those of you that don?t have high-dollar IT budgets and nifty tools to secure your environment? As with most challenges, you have to understand both the problem and its scope before you know how best to proceed. Understand how your business collects information and how it is used. Invest time learning how your POS system operates and do basic things like change default passwords, disable always-on remote access, run a current anti-virus program, install patches, and ensure your firewall adequately protects both inbound AND outbound traffic. Surprisingly enough, most breaches in this space are happening because those five elements are left open, including breaches you see in the news. That?s the blocking and tackling we?re talking about. Once you have these controlled, you can start to ask harder questions like ?How do I find bad guys in my environment BEFORE they steal data?? and ?Why am I storing, handling, processing this data anyway??

Thread: Shop made chain drive twin screw vise - Family Woodworking

Several years ago I made a twin screw chain drive vise for my old work bench and now I have a new bench so I decided to make a new one. This vise is different than any other ones I have seen before. It operates like a mechanics vise. The screws are towards the bottom of the jaws and there are slides that keep the jaws from wracking. I will try to go through the steps to make one.

First you need some steel tube to make the slides, you need 2 different sizes and the smaller one needs to slide inside the larger one without much play. I happened to have some laying around. The larger piece was 1.25" outside and the small piece was 1.125" outside.

I made the jaws out of beech and drilled holes for the slides to go in. To get the holes accurately spaced I clamped both jaws together then clamped them the the drill press. I drilled the 1.25" in the stationary jaw then changed the bit and drilled the 1.125" hole in the moving jaw, I did that without moving the the jaws on the drill press. This way the slides will line up.

For the screws I used 5/8" all thread. You could use whatever you want but for me the 5/8 was cheap and easy to get. At the end of the large slides you need to weld on some nuts. Then put the slides in the jaws. You can press them in with a clamp or gently hammer them in using a wood block to protect the slides.

At this time you should be able to slide the jaws together

The next step is to cut all thread. To measure it just pull out the movable jaw to what you want the max opening to be and measure from the outside of the jaw to the nut at the end of the slide and maybe add and inch or so.

To allow the movable jaw to follow when opening the vise I double nutted inside small slide. A washer goes on the outside and is screwed on the jaw. Then the sprocket goes on. I welded a nut on the sprocket so I could screw the sprocket on then tighten the set screws on the sprocket.

Then screw on the handle which I tapped to screw right on the all thread and tighten against the nut. and put on the chain. It may be a good idea to plan the distance between screws so the length of the chain works out well. Somehow I got lucky both times I built the vises and the chain is snug but not tight.

PST: Spain ousts Portugal in PKs to reach final

source:

Cesc Fabregas beats Rui Patricio in Wednesday?s shootout, sending Spain past Portugal into Euro 2012?s final. (Getty Images)

Man of the Match: Sergio Ramos has always had the potential to be a world class center half, but having spent much of his career as a right back, the Real Madrid defender made his reputation on his ability to lock down the right flank. Today, he added another line to that resume, serving as clean up man against a Portuguese team that had a number of chances chances to flash their counterattacking prowess. Opta credits Ramos with a team-high seven clearances, five of them of the effective/influential variety. Ramos was also second on the team with 80 successful passes, hitting at an 89 percent clip.

NBC Sports: Spain tops Portugal in shootout to make Euro final

Packaged for takeaway:

  • Prematch, Vicente del Bosque threw us (and Portugal) a curve ball that never really broke. Despite not cracking the starting XI for any of Spain?s first four games, Sevilla?s Alvaro Negredo got the start at striker, relegating both Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas to the bench. Despite Spain going two hours in search of a goal, Torres never took his track suit off.
  • The logic? Perhaps the physically stronger Negredo would hold up better against bruising Portugal duo Pepe and Bruno Alves (Alves affirmed his bruising?tendencies?by four times going up and through the back of Spanish forwards ahead of aerial challenges).
  • There was one instance where the Negredo logic seemed to work. In the 29th minute, a long ball out of the defense found Negredo deep in the right of Portugal?s area. Holding up play, Negredo eventually found Xavi Hernandez, who played to the left to Andres Iniesta, who put a 16-yard shot out of play.
  • Portugal?s performance was the biggest reason Spain wasn?t able to better utilize Negredo. Implicitly disagreeing with the Blanc Doctrine (France?s coach implying Spain demands major adjustments because of the amount of time you?re without the ball), Paulo Bento?s surprisingly team played with more ambition than they did in the tournament opener against Germany (and, arguably, any opening 15 minutes this tournament).
  • They didn?t sit back. They came out and met Spain on the ball and only rarely allowed the holders? quick passing game to get through their line. At halftime, Portugal?s possession number was in the mid-40s and would finish at 43.
  • Another close number at halftime: Chances. Neither team had any. Spain saw a couple of Iniesta shots fail to test Rui Patricio, while Portugal?s best chances came from crosses eventually swallowed up by Iker Casillas.
  • This wasn?t your normal? No goals, no shots, but Spain has control, and it?s only a matter of time?game. Portugal was not only on even footing with the champions, but there was a feeling that the match was being played on their terms.
  • Perhaps that?s why del Bosque was the first to make major changes. Negredo was off ?in the 54th, giving way to Fabregas. Six minutes later, Jesus Navas came on for David Silva. The changes made Spain more dangerous, with Fabregas combining with Iniesta to start puncturing the Portuguese defense, but by the time Pedro Rodriguez came on for Xavi (80th minute), it was clear Spain needed more than just new personnel.
  • The big question: Xavi? Why was Xavi Hernandez coming off? Perhaps it was a fitness concern, with Vicente del Bosque skeptical his best playmaker could make it to minute 120. It?s just curious to see Silva (who?d had a decent game) and Xavi come off while Xabi Alonso ? who?d had little to meaningfully do ? stayed on. Why del Bosque can?t, no matter the scenario, get away from playing two deep-lying midfielders?
  • Portugal held off on their changes until late in the half before an obligatory substitution, bringing on Nelson Oliveira for Hugo Almeida. Just as in the first half, it seemed the half played out as they wanted, with a 90th minute chance for Cristiano Ronaldo?nearly sending Portugal through:
    • Spain drew a foul 35 yards out on the left flank, the inswinging restart cleared out to Raul Meireles, who broke Portugal into the counter. He found Ronaldo on the left, who was able to set up an open chance for himself at 15 yards out. His left-footed shot was skied into the crowd, sending us to extra time.
  • After full time, Spain seemed to realize how close they were cutting things. Come minute 91, they took full control of the match. It wasn?t typical Spanish work you `til you wilt control. It was a more measured, deliberative response.
  • In the 104th minute, the approach paid off with the best chance of the match. Building down the left, Spain got to the line and cut a ball back to Iniesta, six yards out at the near post. He redirect was saved by Patricio.
  • By the time the second extra period started, Portugal had regressed into a much more passive stance. They were allowing Spain to keep the ball, more concerned about containing their opponents than regaining possession. For 15 minutes, we saw the match we had expected before kickoff.
  • Spain got one more chance before kicks. A throw-in down their left saw play move across the middle for Jesus Navas, who worked ?with Alvaro Arbeloa to break down the left side of Portugal?s defense. Eventually, Navas had a shot from 12 yards out to the right of goal, Patricio?s right hand blocking a ball headed far post.
  • Spain had five shots and created four chances in extra time. Portugal: Zero and zero.
  • Penalty kicks:
    • Xabi Alonso went first, with a kick to the right of goal saved by Rui Patricio.
    • Joao Moutinho, first for Portugal, had his shot to the left saved by Iker Casillas.
    • Andres Iniesta was the first to score, going right after sending Patricio left. It was the only kick on which Patricio guessed wrong.
    • Pepe pulled Portugal even, side-footing a ball inside the left post, beating a driving Casillas.
    • Gerard Piqu? restored Spain?s lead, skipping a shot over Patricio, who had correctly guessed left post.
    • Bruno Alves looked to go next, but Nani quickly came and took his spot, the order temporarily confused. Putting into the top-left of goal as Casillas dove right, Nani made it 2-2.
    • Sergio Ramos chipped a ball high into the right of goal, over Patricio, putting Spain back in front: 3-2.
    • Now it was Alves? turn, with Cristiano Ronaldo apparently set to do fifth. If Alves missed, however, Ronaldo may never get to kick. Going for power, Alves hit the cross bar, leaving Cesc Fabregas in control of the match.
    • Fabregas nailed a perfect kick off the inside of the left post, leaving a moment?s doubt as to whether it would stay in. The ball rolled along the inside of goal, into the right side netting, by then well inside the goal. For the third time in a row, Patricio guessed right, but for the third time in a row, Spain scored, winning the shootout 4-2.
  • Though Spain was the slightly better team on the day, it wouldn?t have been unjust to see either team go through. But for Portugal to go out before Ronaldo kicked leaves a huge what if. It?s strange, because there?s no reason to think Alves wouldn?t have missed his kick had he gone fifth, but when you leave a tournament, you never want to feel like you could have done something else. Even if this something else is born from superstition, it?s still there.
  • Had Portugal won, Pepe would have been the clear Man of the Match. Mats Hummels? exploits have drawn more attention because (amazingly) he was still unknown to most before this tournament. He also is a more skilled than more central defenders and thus is more apt to open eyes. But Pepe has been the best defender of this competition, having given multiple dominant defensive performances. He remains in the discussion as the world?s best defender (when he?s on the field), a status Pepe re-affirmed on Wednesday.
  • Spain moves on to their third straight major tournament final having likely transcended their most difficult obstacle. True, Germany may be a better team than Portugal, but as we saw today, Portugal was a good stylistic match against Spain. But Spain survives, moves on, and now awaits the winner of tomorrow?s Germany-Italy showdown.

2-mile wall of flame in Colo. fire; more flee

Residents of one community and part of another outside Colorado Springs, Colo., were evacuating Wednesday as a "monster" fire more than doubled in size from Tuesday and a two-mile-wide wall of flame was burning down the backside of a ridge.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered for Crystola and part of Woodland Park after more than 32,000 people had to flee on Tuesday. How many new evacuees were moving out was not immediately available.

Fire crews had expected more weather trouble on Wednesday and by early afternoon scanner traffic confirmed the fire was still in full force.

The fire is moving down a ridge toward Teller County, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported, citing communications from an emergency services scanner. "It's huge," said the voice over the scanner. "I would estimate two-three miles in width."

Both Crystola and Woodland Park, population 7,000, are in Teller County.

In another scanner exchange, a request was made for more fire crews at Blodgett Peak near the U.S. Air Force Academy. "As of right now I cannot hold this hill," a voice said from the fire.

Heavy smoke made for unhealthy air in and around the city. After jumping fire lines Tuesday, the towering blaze has now burned more than 24 square miles and an undetermined number of homes.

While crews should get a break from the heat, a forecast for thunderstorms could mean unpredictable winds.

"We expect further trouble from the weather today," incident commander Rich Harvey said at a press briefing. "We do expect all of our lines to be challenged today."

By late afternoon, those winds started blowing, stirring flames and forcing some crews to retreat, the Gazette reported. C-130 planes used to bomb the fire with retardant were grounded.

Colorado Springs Fire Chief Rich Brown earlier Wednesday called the Waldo Canyon Fire a "monster event" that is "not even remotely close to being contained." The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The National Weather Service issued a forecast saying the next 48 hours would like be very challenging, as winds are forecast. On a scale of one to six on the Haines Index -- which measures the potential for fire growth -- the Waldo Canyon Fire is forecast to be a six by Friday evening.

The White House, meanwhile, said President Barack Obama would tour the area on Friday to offer his support.

Tuesday night, the community of Mountain Shadows, northwest of Colorado Springs, appeared to be enveloped in an orange glow.

People were "freaking out" as they fled Tuesday night, local resident Kathleen Tillman told the Denver Post. "You are driving through smoke. It is completely pitch black, and there is tons of ash dropping on the road."

"This is a fire of epic proportions," Brown said at a briefing Tuesday night.

"It was like looking at the worst movie set you could imagine," Gov. John Hickenlooper added after flying over the fire. "It's almost surreal. You look at that, and it's like nothing I've seen before."

Video: Evacuated: uncertainty breeds fear in the fire zone (on this page)

Brown insisted that "many, many homes" were saved by firefighters.

Hickenlooper told anxious residents that "we have all the support of the U.S. government. We have all the support of the state of Colorado. And we want everybody here to know that."

He emphasized that Colorado was open to tourism, saying various fires had affected just a half-percent of all public lands and perhaps 400 of 10,000 campground sites.

Story: Extreme heat roasts Central Plains, heads east next

Among the evacuees were cadets and staff living in one section of the sprawling U.S. Air Force Academy. Flames crested a ridge high above the campus on Tuesday, forcing more than 2,100 residents there to flee.

A new class of 1,045 cadets will still check in on Thursday but at a different section of the campus. The academy said the entire campus would be closed Wednesday to all visitors and non-essential staff.

Colorado is battling 12 large fires, its worst fire season in history, and other states across the West are being taxed as well.

To the north in Boulder County, 26 homes were evacuated Tuesday when lightning sparked a wildfire. No structures were immediately threatened, but the National Center for Atmospheric Research closed as a precaution.

Wildfires leave Colorado tourism high and dry

The state's largest blaze is the 136-square-mile High Park Fire, which has destroyed 257 homes and killed one woman. That fire was triggered by lightning on June 9 and is nearly contained.

Most of Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana have seen red flag warnings in recent days, meaning extreme fire danger.

Much of the U.S. is seeing "a super-heated spike on top of a decades-long warming trend," Derek Arndt, head of climate monitoring at the National Climatic Data Center, told the Associated Press.

Although the fire season got off to an early start in the West, the number of fires and acreage burned nationwide is still below the 10-year average for this time of year.

Elsewhere in the West:

  • In Utah, a woman was found dead Tuesday in a blaze that has consumed several dozen homes. Her body was found during a damage assessment of the 60-square-mile Wood Hollow Fire near Indianola. The fire was 15 percent contained and evacuations were issued in Fairview, a town of about 1,100 residents.
  • In New Mexico, a fire that burned nearly 70 square miles west of Ruidoso was 90 percent contained, with many residents allowed to return home.
  • In Montana, a wildfire just 2 miles north of Helena destroyed four homes and forced people out of 200 homes. Gov. Brian Schweitzer issued a state of emergency for four counties.
  • In Wyoming, a wildfire in the Bridger-Teton National Forest grew from about 300 acres to 2,000 acres Tuesday, marking the first major wildfire of the season there.

Social Business and Monitoring: Building Meaningful Relationships

Emanuela Zaccone

Emanuela Zaccone

Social Business is not just about marketing. It?s also about monitoring. ?Especially during the last six years, companies moved from a ?fatalistic attitude? regarding social media (?my competitor is on Facebook, what do I have to do? Well, let?s sign up??) to a broader consciousness of the ?social value.?

The three waves of social consciousness

The idea that being present on social media, investing in them and setting up campaigns and activities, does not just mean generating leads or improving brand awareness, but also offers the chance to redefine brand strategy and reputation, is quite recent.

It?s what I call the second wave of social business consciousness: behind the acquisition of competitive positions, companies understood that being on social would mean having the possibility to interact with fans and establish a long-term relationship with them. But at what cost? The ROI issue became central in every social media marketing strategy (and discussion), and monitoring necessity came along with it.

Social media strategists, companies and whoever was working in social began to feel the necessity to monitor the effects of the activities held on these platforms. Nevertheless, the passage from being conscious of the relevance of these relationships to understanding the importance of monitoring was not easy or automatic.

The importance of the social media monitoring process

The importance of the social media monitoring process

In the beginning, there was a non-organic approach: businesses began collecting all the different insights coming from Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, the Twitter platform and so on. There was a lack of a unique analysis framework and, often, a lack of a unified vision that could conjugate brand mission and social media activities. Being conscious that constructing an integrated brand communication could offer a wider brand perception both to ?offline customers? and to ?online users?, was the first step towards a monitoring culture.

The birth of digital command centers

If it made sense being active on social, then it made sense to monitor the results and effects of social media activities on the business and brand reputation. Activities that are not measured are activities that don?t exist: a waste of money, waste of time and waste of engagement opportunities.

The third wave of social consciousness was characterized by two key factors: the rise of a broad variety of analytics tools and platforms and the birth of digital command centers inside companies.

While the first ones can be purchased or freely used by everyone or integrated in social media command centers, it is about more than a mere monitoring unit, and it is really interesting that companies themselves gave birth to command center structures.

While in many cases, social media management has been outsourced to third parties, the social media command centers born inside companies-but Edelman Digital?s SICC can be considered a new and very good example of third party social intelligence command center, see below), as core elements of the business and corporate strategy, were clearly going to have an increasing importance and role soon.

Gatorade, Dell and Intel ? all among the first companies which founded digital command centers, starting 2010 ? used external tools and platforms (such as IBM technologies, Radian6, etc.) to monitor what people were saying about their brands. This included the brand performance and how all this could be improved by feedback coming from monitoring.

Social media monitoring is always a three-sides process: it is necessary to measure growth and online performances (both during advertising campaigns and during regular editorial activity) and brand perception, as stemming from online conversations.

The Edelman SICC - via David Armano

The Edelman SICC ? via David Armano

From insights to relationships

The constant feedback provided to the operational teams and other business units involved in monitoring, can reshape marketing and communication strategies and provide a measure of the impact of online conversations on brand reputation.

Today we can monitor aggregated data (such as the ones obtained from online and offline surveys), but also detailed interactions among people. Big data allow us to do that but they mean nothing without a structured process and well-identified models and KPIs.

Moving from simple engagement measurement to relationship building, is indeed the next big step in social media monitoring and strategy.

That is why social media monitoring must be at the core of an effective circular and never ending process. Thanks to monitoring, it is possible to know what people are saying about our company but also how they interact and how these conversations can be transformed into a strategy.

Obviously, tools and processes can?t function without the right people to acquire meaning. So, it is equally fundamental that the data scientist ? who has at least skills in both statistics and marketing ? is able to apply classic quantitative analytics (engagement, reach, etc.) and qualitative ones. In this sense, social network analysis can play an interesting role in (re)defining the position of the brand and its relationship with its followers online.

Transforming monitoring insights into strategy

During the first phases, many social media command centers ? including the one of Telecom Italia ? worked on quantitative KPIs, aimed mainly at measuring the engagement, produced by social activities with a strong focus on conversions (the easiest indicator to measure and one of the few to be directly connected with investment), growth rate (followers, fans) and traffic data (pageviews, impressions, reach).

However, while these data provide insights on the online brand dimension, they say almost nothing about how the brand itself can be redefined by the actual interactions with fans and followers (or with its detractors).

Since big data collected from social monitoring allow us to observe every single interaction between brand and users and between users and users talking about the brand, it is necessary to transform these observations into strategy and action.

Social network analysis then becomes the enabler of a new way to turn the analytics, that are necessary to leverage monitoring activities, into brand relationship tools.

We can be part of more than one community at the same time, due to the volatility of the ways we ?build relationships online and, especially, on social media. When we take part in a discussion on Twitter using a certain hashtag or when we participate in a Facebook group, post a picture on Instagram and pin some nice images on Pinterest, we are creating value inside a community which is not ours nor an exclusive one. Brands are part of our daily social interactions: we talk about our favorite (or most hated) ones, interact with their online initiatives and show our love towards them.

Brands need to monitor these activities and create the possibility to interact with them. However, that is not enough: they also need to reshape themselves according to the role they assume inside these communities.

There are several questions to be answered. Which kind of networks can be observed around a brand? Which is the role of the brand inside these networks? How can it ?model? them to change or improve its value and reputation? Who are the influencers of the brand or which are the users-bridges that connect significant clusters of users? And a step further: how can the mix between quantitative ?classical? analytics and social network observation help data scientists to make predictions about the success of brand initiatives? In this vision, ROI is no more the holy grail of every Web activity; relationship is as well. Economic return can?t be the main role of social activities: this is not the just the kingdom of business. It is a republic in which brand reputation is the result of a wide range of relationships between the brand itself and its customers.

Social media monitoring then works as an enabler:

  • It is a social media strategy builder, since it gives quantitative and qualitative insights on activities.
  • It is a relationships creator: thanks to the study of the networks, monitoring can help to understand how to exploit and model these networks or how to play an active role inside them.
  • It is a brand awareness builder: better strategies and an active builder role inside networks of users can leverage brand awareness and positively change brand reputation.

Monitoring online activities and brand perception can, for example, be transformed in co-creation initiatives that can leverage brand-users relationships and reduce investment costs, with a relevant feedback on brand reputation.

Going deeper in understanding the social graph and tracking interactions, interests and demographics of users in brand networks can also result in gains regarding CRM strategies and forecasting. Users can create value for the brand and with the brand.

Case: The Reputation Monitoring Room of Telecom Italia

The Reputation Monitoring Room of Telecom Italia ? first of its kind in Italy and active since June 2011 ? is a real time monitoring?facility, focused both on?quantitative?and qualitative analytics.

Telecom Italia Hub

Telecom Italia Hub

Its main purpose is to analyze online conversations and trying to conjugate them with offline surveys and researches, in order to understand which is the impact of online?conversations on brand reputation and how communication and marketing strategies can be reshaped by these analyses.

The RMR ? as it is called ? is part of the Department?of?Corporate Identity, Research & Digital Communication, Brand Strategy and Research Unit. This means that the main purpose of the facility is not just to monitor the online activities and social media engagement, but also to act as a bridge among different business units.

As I wrote, social media monitoring is not just about metrics, it is also about people: people to interact with and ways in which people and brands interact. Social network analysis and engagement indeed play a role which can leverage the Telecom Italia brand image and modify it, thanks to the analysis of brand perception and reputation.

The Reputation Monitoring Room has a central position in this process of monitoring and reshaping strategies. It takes into account the digital activities and the online conversations, but also the offline surveys and researches, in order to find a touch point between these two monitoring dimensions.

We don?t just monitor growth and performances of our online properties, but we also analyze more than 1.500 conversations per month, as emerging from Facebook, Twitter, mainstream news websites, blogs and aggregators; every conversation is manually reviewed, tagged and classified (most of the conversations around our brand are in fact in Italian, and we could not yet find a trustworthy tool for accurate automatic sentiment analysis).

The RMR also sends alerts to the press office, in order to quickly give answers and react to reputation and communication crisis.

Thanks to our researches about analysis models and KPI sets ? which we constantly modify and improve ? we take into account all the different interests of the various business units involved. The RMR has a strong research component: both the RMR founder and I have a an academic past ? as respectively Santa Fe Institute Fellow and PhD ? regarding Web measurements and social network studies. The wider competence of the Corporate Identity, Research & Digital Communication workgroup ? which has a long lasting experience and excellence in offline researches and brand reputation and identity ? allowed us to open wider our research objectives and analysis models.

Our activities so far reduced the response time in case of crisis, allowed our community managers to better invest in social advertising and to better structure their activities on Facebook and Twitter. It provided various business units the opportunity to be better connected to Web influencers who could be interested in one of our cultural initiatives, which represent an important element of Telecom Italia corporate strategy.

To us monitoring is not just about observation, it is about action and relationships. This is where the real value of social business lies.

Sony Xperia P review

Android Central

Can build quality and multimedia chops redeem a phone lacking the latest version of Android? Find out as we take a closer look at the Sony Xperia P.

The fact that we’re starting to see dual-core phones at entry-level price points is a testament to the tremendous pace at which smartphone technology is advancing. Last year this kind of multiprocessing horsepower was reserved for only the most expensive handsets, but as we cross over into the second half of 2012, we’re increasingly seeing these chips in mid-range and low-end phones too.

One such device is the Sony Xperia P. Sitting between the Xperia S and Xperia U in terms of specs and price, the Xperia P is the middle child in Sony’s Xperia NXT series. It aims to differentiate itself with its own unique take on the Xperia NXT “transparent element” design, using an aluminum chassis. It also offers few extra whistles and bells, including NFC support and an 8MP EXMOR R camera.

But there’s a “but” coming, and if you’ve read our Xperia S and Xperia U reviews, you’ll probably have correctly guessed that the Xperia P ships with the 18-month-old Android 2.3 Gingerbread, as opposed to the newer 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. So is this a deal-breaker, or does Sony offer enough added value in other areas for this to be overlooked until the update arrives? Find out below, in our full review of the Sony Xperia P.

Dell XPS 14 review a 14inch Ultrabook with Ivy Bridge and graphics might

While we can't say that we universally liked Dell's first attempt at an Ultrabook, the XPS 13 we reviewed about three months ago, we can quite confidently say that it earned our respect. Here was a smartly styled, sophisticated machine free of stickers and bloatware from a company that, let's be honest, has delivered its share of each over the years. That machine was far from perfect, but it showed a purity of vision in design that you couldn't help but acknowledge.

So where do you go from there? Why, you go bigger of course. Meet the new Dell XPS 14, successor in name only to a model that went out of production over a year ago. It is, as you might have guessed, an inch larger than the XPS 13 and so has more room for ports and pixels -- but there's more to it than that. In some ways this feels like a more polished machine than the 13 that came before, and it's certainly faster but it, too, is far from perfect. Join us for a joyous exploration of why.
