Distillation is the centuries-old process used to produce alcohol. Heat is used to separate the components of a liquid, or mash, and as vaporization takes place the vapors are cooled so they condense into neutral spirits with little color, aroma, or flavor.

The distiller then blends this neutral spirit with other alcohol or flavorings and may or may not leave it to mature, or age, until the desired flavor and aroma is achieved before bottling. Brandy and clear, colorless grappa are two examples of spirits distilled from wine, which you will find in most standard bar stocks. The following are the best-known distillations from wine produced in countries around the world.

Armagnac Armagnac is a pale golden, fiery, dry-tasting French brandy. Under French law, only white grapes from the Haut-Armagnac, Tenareze, and Bas-Armagnac regions of Gascony, in southwest France, may be distilled for Armagnac. The distillation takes place after the grape harvest, which occurs between October and April. Unlike cognac, its younger cousin, Armagnac has traditionally been made with only one distillation, but a recent change in legislation means double distillation is now allowed, speeding up the maturation process, which takes place in oak barrels.

Three stars on the label mean it has had at least two years? maturation; V.S.O.R, at least five years; Napoleon and X.O., at least six years; and Hors d?Age at least 10 years in the barrel. A vintage year on the label indicates the year of the harvest. A vintage Armagnac is never blended.

Brandy First discovered in the middle of the thirteenth century in France as an attempt to produce a medicinal drink, brandy is now made around the world wherever grapes are grown. After two distillations, the clear, colorless alcohol is given its distinctive nutty brown color and flavor by aging in wood, often oak, barrels. The longer a brandy ages, the more refined its flavor is judged to be. In the United States.

Cognac Prehaps the best-known brandy in the world, cognac comes from a uprcific area in western France centered around the town of Cognac Hi ihe Charente region. To be labeled as ?cognac,? Crappa This clear, Italian spirit, about 80 proof, is distilled from the remains Of the grapes used in wine production, the stems, skins, and pits. Crappa made from white wine is dry and fiery, while that from red wine has a powerful flavor. Although grappa is best known as an Italian spirit, versions of it are made in other countries, such as marc in France.

Marc This French pomace spirit is distilled from the press residue resulting Irom wine production. Depending on the variety, it either tastes powerful and full flavored (marc de bourgogne) or light, dry, and very soft (marc de champagne). The alcohol content is between 80 and 90 proof. There is a flavor difference between marc made from red-wine and white-wine residues. A small glass of marc, served neat, is aperfect digestive.

Metaxa The best-known Creek spirit, metaxa is distilled from black grapes. The alcohol content is about 80 proof. Stars on the label tell you how long the liquor was aged. Three stars means three years; five stars, five years; and seven stars, seven years. Bottles labeled as Private Reserve have been matured for at least 20 years, and have the smoothest flavor.

Pisco This very tangy, colorless brandy is the national drink of Chile, and is the main ingredient in the refreshing cocktail Pisco Sour. Produced from black grapes with a high proportion of muscatel grapes, it is matured in clay casks.

Weinbrand This German grape brandy, whose name translates as ?burned wine,? is distilled using some wines from neighboring countries, but legislation requires up to 85 percent of the final product to be German. It must then be matured for six months in oak casks holding a maximum of 1,000 liters (about 2,600 gallons) each. Old weinbrand must be cellared for a minimum of 12 months.

If it is then at least 76 proof, it will receive an official reference number and can be sold. Like cognac, weinbrand is double distilled. Weinbrand should be served no warmer than room temperature, and is best served in a brandy snifter. If it is a little on the cool side, however, it does not matter because it will quickly attain the correct temperature through heat transferred from the hands.

Of all the curious rhetoric floating around both Washington and the campaign trail, the strangest may be the demand of many Republicans that Congress raise taxes for low-income working households even as it cuts taxes for the wealthy. The left has, not surprisingly, gleefully leapt on the issue. And, honestly, it seems like terrible politics for the GOP.

But this idea is hardly new. It is a key element of various forms of consumption taxes such as the National Retail Sales Tax (including the wildly misnamed FAIR tax). It is also favored among those on the right who want to close ?loopholes? to force low- and moderate-income households to pay some income tax even as they cut rates across the board?a design almost certain to favor high-income taxpayers.

Texas governor and GOP presidential hopeful Rick Perry supports the FAIR tax (or at least did last year when he wrote his manifesto Fed Up). This levy would repeal nearly all federal taxes (including the income tax and the payroll tax) and replace them with a single-rate national sales tax on the purchase of all goods and services. FAIR tax backers set this rate at 23 percent but the Tax Policy Center?s Bill Gale and others have concluded that the rate would have to exceed 30 percent if the scheme is to raise as much money as current law.

To try to get a sense of what such a levy would do to the tax burden across incomes, the Tax Policy Center analyzed a generic consumption tax designed to replace most federal taxes. In, um, fairness, it is important to note that TPC did not review the actual FAIR tax but rather a stylized Value Added Tax ?type consumption tax. But any broad-based consumption tax will generate roughly the same pattern.

Still, the results are dramatic. On average, such a levy would raise the share of taxes paid for all but the highest-income households, who would pay far less than they do today. A consumption tax without any rebate to protect low-income people (the red bar in the graph) would be extremely regressive. In other words, the more you make, the lower your tax burden, and the less you make, the higher?a mirror image of today?s moderately progressive tax system.

The reason is simple: A consumption levy would not tax income from saving, and low- and moderate-income people save a lot less than the rich. Thus, if Congress taxes consumption, those down the economic food chain will inevitably pay more in taxes. One way Congress can address the problem is with a rebate?effectively exempting thousands of dollars of spending from tax (the exact amount is tied to the poverty level so it rises as income falls).

As the blue bars in the graph show, such a rebate would not completely fix the problem. Low- and moderate-income families would still pay more on average than they do today. But they?d pay a much smaller share than if there was no rebate.

There is a funny thing about the rebate, though (called a prebate in the FAIR tax). It would end up exempting a lot of low-income households from tax?recreating exactly the problem Perry and others complain about. And even with a rebate, the highest income 5 percent of households would still enjoy a major tax cut even as others pay more. Such a consumption tax would reduce the tax burden for the top 1 percent (who make an average of $1.6 million per year) by a stunning 40 percent.

Of course, tax systems are about more than fairness. Efficiency and the effect on the overall economy matter. But I?m not sure I?d want to run for president on a promise to cut the tax burden on millionaires by 40 percent even as I?d raise taxes for nearly everybody else. Forget class warfare. This is more like the charge of the Light Brigade.

"Mom Life": a Tupperware web series for modern moms (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Jen and Barb are just your average moms.

Well, average if your mom brings a full camera crew and a hunky Hollywood star into her living room to talk about their favorite products and recipes.

Now in their third season, Jen Pate and Barb Machen are hosts of the Webby Award-winning series "Mom Life," which asks the hard-hitting questions facing the modern mother: "How Do You Get your Kids Excited About Brushing?" "What Will Your Children Remember From Their Childhood?" and "Are You Tired of the Same Old Cupcakes?"

For each weekly episode, a celebrity guest or parenting expert joins in the comfort of Pate's actual Studio City living room. The five-minute webisodes interweave clips of the moms in action -- taking their kids on road trips or dealing with picky eaters.

On a recent Thursday taping, the guest was Gilles Marini -- the dreamy Frenchman Samantha Jones stumbled upon in the shower during a scene from "Sex and the City 2" and star of ABC's just-canceled "Brothers and Sisters."

The threesome discussed home cooking, with Marini painting himself as a picture of male domestic perfection in his ability to bake strawberry shortcake -- as well as his and the mom's shared love of V8 juice.

The advertising side of "Mom Life" is an unapologetic aspect of its programing. The show is backed by Specific Media, a digital advertising company focused on brand-funded TV-quality content for the web.

Think a product-pushing '50s Tupperware party in today's new communication technology age -- with a splash of contemporary mommy realness.

"Our goal is to reach women, put a smile on their face and help them feel not alone," Pate told TheWrap. The young mother of two met Machen at an L.A. "Mommy and Me" class seven years ago in what Pate calls a "mommy pick-up."

"I was like, 'She is so cool!' We ended up becoming best friends, and we hung out every day."

The pair decided to build a show in what they saw as a void in female TV personalities discussing motherhood. "Contemporary motherhood looks very different than motherhood used to look. So we came up with this idea," Pate said.

The set has an undeniable familial dysfunction. It can easily be interrupted by the home phone ringing or the kids returning home from summer camp.

But Pate says that is the nature of a show made outside of the studio. "I live here! This is my home."

With over 75 episodes already aired, "Mom Life" has pushed countless products for more than 40 of the largest consumer brands. Pate and Machen have appeared on "The Rachael Ray Show," "The CBS Early Show," "Entertainment Tonight," and People.com.

But even though V8 might be funding their Thursday testimonials, Machen says the show is really about the dialogue.

"It's like a conversation in a coffee shop," Machen said. " how our relationship organically grew."

Libya's deadliest weapons not yet corralled (AP)

WASHINGTON ? No one can be sure who controls the Libyan government's weapons stockpiles, a stew of deadly chemicals, raw nuclear material and some 30,000 shoulder-fired rockets that officials fear could fall into terrorists' hands in the chaos of Moammar Gadhafi's downfall or afterward.

One immediate worry, U.S. intelligence and military officials say, is that Gadhafi might use the weapons to make a last stand. But officials also face the troubling prospect that the material, which was left under Gadhafi's control by a U.S.-backed disarmament pact, could be obtained by al-Qaida or other militants even after a rebel victory is secured.

The main stockpile of mustard gas and other chemicals, stored in corroding drums, is at a site southeast of Tripoli. Mustard gas can cause severe blistering and death. A cache of hundreds of tons of raw uranium yellowcake is stored at a small nuclear facility east of the capital.

Weapons demolition teams hired by the State Department have located and destroyed some of the anti-aircraft rocket systems in rebel-held parts of the country.

U.S. and allied officials say chemical and nuclear stockpiles appear to be still under the control of what's left of the Libyan government despite rebel military advances into the capital. That may or may not be reassuring. It depends on whether Gadhafi loyalists, increasingly desperate, adhere to international agreements not to use or move the material.

The State Department has also sent experts to Libya to confer with rebel leaders and Libya's neighbors about abiding by those same compacts and beefing up border security to prevent weapons from being smuggled out.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Tuesday the U.S. is working to ensure that "the governing forces in Libya have full command and control of any WMD or any security assets that the state might have had." Jamie F. Mannina, spokesman for the State Department's Bureau of Arms Control, Verification and Compliance, said Libya's known chemical weapons storage facilities have been monitored since the start of the civil war.

Still, many U.S. officials question whether NATO has enough people on the ground to make sure the material remains secure if Libyan security forces flee their posts. NATO's decision to limit its participation in the conflict has kept the coalition's investment in blood and treasure to a minimum. But that has not helped the cause of nonproliferation.

With the battle for the capital Tripoli still unfolding, military advisers from Britain, France, Italy and Qatar are feeding intelligence to the rebels and NATO bombers on the whereabouts of the enemy. That has left U.S. intelligence relying primarily on military drone, satellite and spy plane reports to track Gadhafi's arsenal.

"No one seems clear" how many of the estimated 30,000 anti-aircraft rockets, and other stockpiles still remain after six months of pounding by air strikes, according to a U.S. official who has been following the Libyan events. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss matters of intelligence.

As for chemical agents, said British Embassy spokesman Hetty Crist, officials are concerned about the security of some 11 metric tons of mustard gas.

Crist said the Libyan stocks are "under guard in secure and remote locations" at the moment and cannot be used easily for warfare because they are not weaponized.

Despite dismantling much of his nuclear program after making a deal with the Bush administration, Gadhafi has enough weaponry ? if he can still reach it ? to try to sell to militants.

"There are still going to be a lot of Gadhafi loyalists who could hijack the weapons supplies and use them for an insurgency like Iraq," said Democratic Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, a member of the House Intelligence Committee.

And if the material goes unguarded, it could be seized by al-Qaida militant sympathizers, he said in an interview Tuesday. "A single rocket can do damage," he said, recalling the downing of a Chinook helicopter Aug. 5 in Afghanistan from a rocket-propelled grenade fired by the Taliban, killing all 38 troops on board.

The State Department has spent $3 million on two international weapons abatement teams charged with finding and destroying the antiaircraft systems along with other lethal munitions and landmines.

The teams have demolished some of the shoulder-launched antiaircraft missile systems called MANPADS, including nearly 30 Russian SA-7 launchers, according to Alexander Griffiths, director of operations for the Swiss Foundation for Mine Action, one of the abatement groups.

But the teams are only scouring rebel-held battle sites and arms depots, and are not sent into combat hot zones.

Libya possesses a variety of leftover, aging weapons of mass destruction. Libya agreed to halt its WMD programs in 2003, under economic pressure from U.S. and Western embargoes. Gadhafi surrendered the hardware for his nuclear program and let the U.S. remove about 11.5 pounds of weapons-grade uranium from a nuclear research reactor near Tripoli in 2009.

But there are still some 500 to 900 metric tons of raw uranium yellowcake stored in drums at Libya's lone nuclear reactor, east of Tripoli. The supply is less of a worry for U.S. officials because it requires heavy industrial refining and enrichment before it could be used as an explosive. But it could be sold for a large profit to those more capable of building a nuclear weapon.

Gadhafi also had extensive chemical weapons, which his forces used against Libya's southern neighbor, Chad, in 1987.

After 2003, Tripoli closed its chemical weapons research and production facilities and destroyed 3,500 unfilled chemical shells used to deliver them on the battlefield.

But the scheduled destruction of some 23 tons of mustard gas didn't start until last year and was only halfway finished when the system used in the destruction broke, said Paul Walker of the environmental group Global Green, which closely monitors chemical weapons.

The remaining mustard agent is stored inside a domed concrete bunker a few hundred miles south of Tripoli, according to a U.S. official, who insisted on anonymity to speak about the WMD threat in Libya. The facility also had contained more than 1,300 tons of "precursor" chemicals that could be combined to make toxic agents, the official said.

The most pressing matter is to make sure the mustard gas does not end up on the black market or with terrorists, the official said. Stored in canisters that showed signs of corrosion during a 2006 visit by American officials, the chemicals could be easily moved.

Walker said he has heard no evidence that anyone has tried to divert the chemicals. "Any major action such as trucks pulling up, or major troop movements, that would be known pretty quickly," he said, "and action such as a NATO airstrike could be taken fairly quickly."

There is no indication that Libya has sarin, soman or other dispersible nerve agents that can cause death on contact. And Gadhafi's efforts to build a biological weapons program did not get far, according to the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a nonproliferation group.

One of GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich?s favorite lines is that he is ?running on ideas.? And indeed, he has a reputation as an ideas man in Washington, D.C.

Gingrich has an opinion on ? and a plan for ? everything from offshore oil drilling and immigration to infrastructure spending and spaceflight.

But ideas alone don?t fund presidential ambitions. They can?t buy plane tickets and tour buses, much less Greek cruises or a $500,000 credit line at Tiffany?s.

Gingrich?s total assets?were valued?at between $6.7 million and $30.7 million in 2010. He has written 23 books and produced eight documentaries with his wife. He commands between $40,000 and $50,000 per speech.

So how does Gingrich do it?

The former Speaker of the House has financed his operations by creating a large network of for-profit and nonprofit organizations which ?directly and indirectly?spread the gospel according to Newt. All told, the former Georgia Republican congressman held no fewer than 25 titles, positions and occupations before running for president, according to a?CNN report.

The majority of Gingrich?s assets come from his numerous name-branded, for-profit groups: The Gingrich Group, Gingrich Communications, Gingrich Productions and Gingrich Holdings. He uses these companies to produce, distribute and supplement his prolific output of books, documentaries and public speeches. (RELATED: What exactly is a ?gotcha? question?)

Relations between the corporations are cozy. For example, in his July financial disclosures Gingrich declared a ?promissory note? from the Gingrich Group, LLC to Gingrich Productions, Inc., valued somewhere between $5 million and $25 million.

The former Georgia congressman is CEO and chairman of the Gingrich Group, a communications and consulting firm he founded in 1999 after leaving office. One of the company?s first clients was Freddie Mac. A spokesperson for the mortgage lender?said?Ginrgich was hired ?to provide strategic counsel on a range of issues that we?re facing related to policy and the industry.?

Gingrich later criticized the bailouts of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac,?saying it was ?a tragedy? that the lending giants ?had so many politicians beholden to them.?

Gingrich Productions, which ?provides talent for audio, video and photographic productions,? paid its namesake more than $2.4 million in distributions last year and is valued at between $500,000 and $1 million. Gingrich also collected approximately $72,000 last year from a Florida talent agency, The Lubbers Agency, Inc., which also lists him as a director. Lubbers, presumably, refers to his daughter Kathy Gingrich Lubbers, who also leads Gingrich Communications.

Gingrich Communications is the marketing and media arm of Gingrich?s operations. It publishes The Americano, an online news site offering ?a more balanced view on all the issues that concern American Hispanics today.? The Americano?s editor-in-chief, Sylvia Garcia, also works on Hispanic inclusion issues for Gingrich?s presidential campaign.
