The actor was taken off life support Thursday at Encino Tarzana Medical Center, according to one of his managers, Kathryn Boole. He was taken there unconscious on May 11 and placed in a medically induced coma.

Conaway had been treating himself with pain pills and cold medicine while in a weakened condition, said Phil Brock, his other manager.

"He's a gentle soul with a good heart ... but he's never been able to exorcise his demons," Brock said after Conaway was hospitalized.

The actor had acknowledged his addictive tendencies in a 1985 interview with The Associated Press, when he described turning his back on the dream of a pop music career. He'd played guitar in a 1960s band called 3 1/2 that was the opening act for groups including Herman's Hermits, the Young Rascals and the Animals.

"I thought, 'If I stay in this business, I'll be dead in a year.' There were drugs all over the place, and people were doing them. I had started to do them. I realized that I'd die," Conaway told the AP.

His effort to avoid addiction failed, and his battles with cocaine and other substances were painfully shared on Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew, the VH1 series with TV and radio personality Dr. Drew Pinsky. Conaway, who'd had back surgery, blamed his cocaine use and pain pill abuse in part on lingering pain.

Conaway was born in New York City on Oct. 5, 1950, to parents who were in show business. His father was an actor, producer and agent, and his mother was an actress.

He made his Broadway debut in 1960 at the age of 10 in the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama All the Way Home. By then his parents were divorced, and Conaway had spent a great deal of time with his grandparents who lived in the Astoria section of Queens.

"I used to hold in a lot of feelings. I'd smile a lot but I was really miserable. I didn't know it at the time, but I've figured it out since. When I was on stage, I could make people laugh," he said in 1985.

He toured in the national company of the comedy Critic's Choice, then attended a professional high school for young actors, musicians and singers. After abandoning music, he returned to acting with a two-year stint in Grease, on Broadway (playing the lead role of Danny Zuko at one point) and eventually with the touring company.

The musical about high-school love brought Conaway to Los Angeles and television, including a small part on Happy Days that led to larger roles. He had roles in small films and then in the movie version of Grease (1978), although he lost the top-billed part to John Travolta.

In 1978, he won the Taxi job that put him in the company of Judd Hirsch, Danny de Vito and Andy Kaufman in what proved to be a hit for ABC.

The tall, gangly actor, with a shock of blond hair and what the late longtime AP drama critic Michael Kuchwara called a "wide-angle smile" and "a television face, just right for popular consumption," appeared a success.

But Conaway, who received two Golden Globe nominations for Taxi, said he tired early of being a series regular, although he stayed with the series for three years, until 1981 (Taxi ended in 1983 after moving to NBC the year before).

"I got very depressed. Hollywood can be a terrible place when you're depressed. The pits. I decided I had to change my life and do different things," he said.

His movie career failed to ignite, however, and Conaway shifted back to TV with the short-lived 1983 fantasy series Wizards and Warriors, and the 1985 flop Berrengers, a drama set in a New York department store. He made a bid to return to Broadway in The News, but the rock musical about tabloid journalism closed within days.

A 1994-98 stint in the sci-fi TV series Babylon 5 as security chief Zack Allan proved successful, but it was followed by only scattered roles on stage, in films and TV shows. He was in the reality series Celebrity Fit Club in 2006 and then in Celebrity Rehab, in which the frail Conaway used a wheelchair and blacked out on camera.

A fall in 2010 caused a broken hip and other injuries that left him in more precarious health.

Conaway told the Los Angeles Times in a January 2011 article that series producers asked him to "give them drama." But he also said he welcomed the support he received from those who viewed his struggle.

"I got a lot of love from people, and when people stop me on the street and say, 'Man, your story touched me so much,' it just makes all this pain worthwhile, you know?" he said. "I don't know where actors go after they die, but I know people who help other people have a nice place to go. And I would like to go there if I can."

Conaway was wed twice, first to Kerri Young and then to Rona Newton-John, sister of pop star Olivia Newton-John. Both marriages ended in divorce.

We get asked a number of questions about inquiries relating to credit bureaus. For example: Is it true that if your credit has been checked too many times it could affect your score?

Another question that we regularily get is: How many times can we check our credit without affecting the score?

Although it?s true that your credit score may fall slightly (2-3 pts) following some types of credit checks, experts and credit bureaus all say that when you shop around for auto, student or mortgage loans during a short time frame, it results in a single inquiry. If you have good credit, multiple inquiries may have zero effect on your score. Credit cards are a different story but we are primarily talking about auto loans and getting pre-approved for auto financing here.

To prevent credit score damage due to multiple hard inquiries over a short time period, scoring models recognize that borrowers often shop around for the best loan. We call it ?Smart people Shop? so why would you get a lower score for being smart? You don?t! ?Looking for a mortgage, auto or student loan may cause multiple lenders to request your credit report, even though you are only looking for one loan,? FICO?s consumer information advisor explains. For purposes of calculating the credit score, ?inquiries for mortgage lending and auto finance (new, used & refinance) purposes within a given period of time, generally 14 days, are counted by credit scoring systems as a single inquiry,? says the director of public education for credit bureau Experian. We have heard this ourselves, directly from each of the credit bureaus and have posted this fact in our FAQ?s and on our website. ?There is no limit to the number of inquiries for those purposes,? he says.

While auto, mortgage and student loan applications over a brief period are treated as a single inquiry, that isn?t the case for credit cards. For consumers, ?this means that each additional credit card inquiry can potentially hurt your score ? although by less than 5 points each in most cases,? says the consumer operations manager for myFICO .Com. ?For this reason, randomly applying for credit cards is not a good idea. Instead, when credit card shopping, consumers should first do their homework by comparing rates, terms and features being offered by lenders, and then only apply for the cards that best meet their needs.?

Still, it?s unlikely that credit checks will prevent you from borrowing. ?Inquiries alone will never be the reason an application is declined,? he says. That means as long as your credit report shows a record of on-time payments, you don?t need to worry much about having your credit checked from time to time.

The Cut List: Who Desperately Needs a Win at UFC 130?

UFC 130 kicks off a busy summer in the world of MMA, but with so many fighters now under the Zuffa umbrella it's no time to get complacent. Just about every undercard has its share of fighters who need a win just to stay viable in the big leagues, and Saturday night's event is no exception.

Let's check out who might be looking at a win-or-go-home scenario at UFC 130, and who merely needs to lose with a little flair.

Kendall Grove (12-8-1 overall, 7-5 UFC)
Who he's fighting: Tim Boetsch
Why he's in danger: It doesn't seem like it, but Grove has been a UFC mainstay for nearly five years now. Kind of surprising, right? Or maybe it's just surprising that a guy could hang around in the middle of the pack for that long, making no significant moves up or down, and yet still hanging on to his job. Grove has a talent for survival in that way. He loses two in a row, then wins two in a row. Then he loses again. Then wins. Then loses. Then...you get it. The UFC overlords have shown that they'll only put up with that pattern for so long, with occasional exceptions made for fan favorites or aging legends. Grove is neither, really, and he's coming off an unimpressive showing in a decision loss to Demian Maia. If he loses this he'll be 2-4 in his last six fights. And the two wins? Both came against fighters who are no longer with the UFC. If Grove doesn't want to join them, he'd better pull out a victory.
Odds of getting cut: 2-1. Boetsch is a difficult opponent for him. Grove's stand-up is sharp enough and he's got that gangly jiu-jitsu game off the bottom that gives some people trouble, but he can be outwrestled, which is Boetsch's specialty. If he loses a snoozer of a decision, somebody better pass Grove the want ads.

Tim Boetsch (12-4 overall, 3-3 UFC)
Who he's fighting: Kendall Grove
Why he's in danger: Boetsch has already been cut from the UFC once, and without ever losing two in a row. He went 2-2 in his first stint, taking one step forward and one step back until the UFC sent him down to the minors to beat up on scrubs. Now he's back, but already up to his old tricks with a 1-1 record this time around. In his last fight he fell victim to Phil Davis' "Mr. Wonderful" kimura, which is the MMA equivalent of getting posterized by a monster dunk in the NBA. Boetsch's problem isn't just his record ? it's his style. He favors the wrestler's grind, which doesn't make you many friends in the UFC offices. If they can't count on you to at least put on a show in defeat, your contract finds its way to the shredder a lot quicker. Now a middleweight, Boetsch needs to get back to the 'Hulk smash!' style he displayed in his UFC debut. If he can overpower and straight-up bully Grove, he stands a good chance of winning the fight and keeping his job.
Odds of getting cut: 3-1. Boetsch has only been submitted once in his career, and that was a freakish incident to begin with. If Grove has to fight from the bottom against this guy he's going to have a long night. I'm not saying it'll be fun to watch, but I think Boetsch wins. If he doesn't want to go back to the bush leagues, he'd better.

Rafaello Oliveira (14-3 overall, 1-2 UFC)
Who he's fighting: Gleison Tibau
Why he's in danger: Oliveira has also been cut once already, and he wouldn't be back this soon if Bart Palaszewski hadn't pulled out with an injury in the weeks before this fight. The UFC appreciates a fighter willing to step up on short notice and do the organization a solid, so as long as Oliveira can turn in a halfway decent effort he can at least make a case for continued employment. Then again, the flip side of taking a short notice fight like this is that you might be signing yourself up for one seriously bad showing if you aren't adequately prepared. When you end the fight bloodied and beaten, people tend to remember that image and forget how eager you were to jump in there and scrap.
Odds of being cut: Even. Would cutting a guy who stepped up on short notice for you be a real cold-hearted move? Sure. Has the UFC shown an absolute willingness to make such cold-hearted moves in the past? You bet.

Cole Escovedo (17-6 overall, 0-0 UFC)
Who he's fighting: Renan Barao
Why he's in danger: Escovedo has been in the game for almost ten years now, and it's hard not to wonder if he didn't spend the best of those years as the pre-Zuffa era WEC featherweight champ. There wasn't a lot of fame or money in that particular title back in those days, and he's spent the years since then bouncing around from one promotion to the next without ever putting serious roots down. He got knocked out in the IFL, won one fight in the Strikeforce Challengers series, and had mixed results with Dream. Getting his foot in the door with the UFC is a very big deal, but he shouldn't expect much patience from the bosses now that he's there. The fact is, Escovedo is pushing 30 and it's now-or-never time. He's got talent, but the UFC isn't likely to see him as investment worth sitting on for too long. He needs to show that he's got the goods to last at this level, and he needs to do it in a hurry.
Odds of getting cut: 2-1. This is a winnable fight, but by no means an easy one. The UFC is going to be looking for Escovedo to show that he's not just some guy who beats the also-rans and loses to the rest. If he's smart, he'll see this somewhat late notice bout on the bottom of the card for what it is: a tryout. If he's not ready to make the most of it now, after the career he's had, then he never will be.

If you?ve always watched the big bodybuilders working out in your gym and have wished to have a similar physique, the good news is that you can do it. We all can. But you must be very committed and persistent as it isn?t an easy task and it does take quite some time. At the end of the day it?s worth all of the hard work as there are many benefits with looking good. Keep the following information in mind because it will help you to get the most out of what you put in.

Your diet can actually play a more important role in the results you achieve as a bodybuilder than your exercise system. In reality, you won?t get the ?ripped? muscle definition results you want if you don?t eat the proper foods. The same is true when you are in your ?bulk up? phase. You have to eat right. Please don?t think you can do the ?bulking up? phase and the ?cutting? phase at the same time. It just isn?t possible. The way you eat in each phase is unique to what you are trying to accomplish. The first step is to bulk up. You need to increase your muscle mass. To do this, you must eat a lot of foods. Your daily calories should equal about 15 ? 20 times what your weight is. You have to eat less than your RMR (resting metabolic rate) so you don?t burn calories when you sleep. The reduced calorie ?cutting? stage comes after the bulk up phase and it?s the more challenging of the two phases you must go through. You cut way back on your carbs ? about 1 gram of carbohydrates per pound of body weight ? with the exception of fresh fruits. When you are on the bulking up diet plan, it?s true you can eat a lot of foods, but you must eat high-quality. Find a competent plan ? either on line or from a trainer at your gym ? and follow it. Don?t spend all your time at McDonald?s or Baskin-Robbins. The mainstay of your bulking up diet should be protein with as little fat as possible, vegetables and fruits, and complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains. Skip the white flour bread. A good rule of thumb is one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight.

If your aim is to get lean and get a six pack you can totally forget about any alcohol! Your body metabolizes it like it does to carbohydrates, so it doesn?t actually get stored as fat. What this means for you is your fat won?t budge an inch because your body has to first burn off the alcohol as energy before it can even start using your fat stores for energy. Both lowered muscle strength and a lessened libido are results of consuming alcohol, which is another good two reasons to keep away from it. By drinking you?re simply wasting all of your progress for the week, is it really worth it? However, if you are very determined to get ripped you will not consume any alcoholic beverages.

Your muscle will grow bigger providing you make things harder each time you workout, so you?ll need to lift heavier weights. If you are lifting the same weights day in and day out, your muscles will become stronger but you will hit a plateau once you become strong enough to lift the same weight.
