KegDroid dispenses beer with the help of a Xoom tablet and an Arduino board
Here's an instance of NFC technology that's more exciting than yet another tap-to-pay scenario. Google employee Paul Carff combined a Motorola Xoom running ICS with an Arduino microcontroller to create KegDroid, a friendly green beer dispenser. The Xoom acts as a gatekeeper to that brewed goodness, only letting the bot dispense drinks after users swipe an authorized badge. The badge is read by an NFC scanner on the bottom of the case and is then authenticated (or rejected) by the Arduino board. Once the system grants access, users can choose from two selections on tap via a custom Android application displayed on the Xoom's screen. As Android Community points out -- and as you'll see in the video below -- the KegDroid hasn't mastered a bartender-level pour (read: there's way too much foam). Still, this is oodles cooler than your average keg, wouldn't you agree?

Be Concise! ? The Top Questions Asked At A Y Combinator Interview
As of yesterday Y Combinator began its marathon series of interviews to decide which startup teams will ultimately go through the - now world-renowned - program. Interviews go on for five days. Rumours that people have been seen running screaming from the building shouting "The Horror!" have not been confirmed. But I'm currently in the Valley catching up with one or two of those European hopefuls trying to get into Paul Graham's good books - indeed I bumped into one team at San Francisco's SFO airport. Turns out the YC pitch document I saw being worked on a laptop on the plane over was for Stackblaze. The guys behind it, James Cunningham and Colin Hayhurst, also put together a cute web app full to the brim with the kinds of typically blunt questions you get asked at a YC interview. You can check it out here, and subject yourself to the same torture as all those YC hopefuls.linda perry world aids day horse slaughter horse slaughter world aids day 2011 chester mcglockton chester mcglockton

Space travel coming to an airport near you? Maybe, if Skylon keeps its cool
Want to get from New York to Perth in under 4 hours, or maybe just head to outer space on a lark? Reaction Engines' "Skylon" mach 5 spaceplane might be your chariot -- or not. Its scheme of ingesting oxygen from the atmosphere instead of stowing it like a 50-year old modern multi-stage rocket sounds good, but the project's fate may hang on critical new tests. Failure is still a possibility, but if the high-speed, superhot gases can be cooled enough for the hybrid Sabre engines to work, and if Reaction Engines Limited can secure another round of funding, punching your space-ticket could soon be a very real possibility.
