Cassandra Lim and Markie Alcala rolled past their rivals in straight sets to barge into the Last 16 stage of their respective divisions in the MVP Sports Foundation-Bingo Bonanza Philippine Badminton Ranking System (PBaRS) tournament which got under way yesterday at the Pohang Badminton Courts in Bacolod City.

Lim, playing out of Escoses Training Camp, whipped Jade Tan, 21-4, 21-10, to arrange a clash with Flo Lamigo of La Salle, who dominated Michelle Cua, 21-8, 21-11, in their own side of the duel in the Under-19 girls singles.

Alcala, on the other hand, fashioned out a 21-16, 21-11 victory over Karl Ganaden of Zambales Warriors to advance in the Under-15 boys singles which he ruled in the inaugural staging of the circuit at PowerSmash last March.

Alcala, who fell short of his bid in the U-19 class of the event put up by Vice President Jejomar Binay, Rep. Albee Benitez and businessman-sportsman Manny Pangilinan, will next face Vincent Manuel, who defeated William Cervante, 21-14,21-12.

Others who advanced were Patrick Gecosala, who repulsed Ryan Dizer, 21-12, 24-22; Gabriel Vargas, thwarted Fides Bagasbas, 21-15, 21-19; Frell Gabuelo, who whisked off Paolo Gonzales, 21-11, 21-13; and Glenn Lopez, who routed Ronald Ongcuanco, 21-6, 21-8.

Joining Lim and Lamigo in the girls U-19 cast were Athea Osorio, Mary Chua, Ana Barredo, Elisha Ongcuanco, Desiree Buiza, Danica Pelegrino, Angelica Muyrong, Selina Sandiego and Dia Magno.

Osorio beat Pamela Lim, 21-14, 21-15; Chua dominated Marie Go, 21-13, 21-9; Barredo defeated Sylvia Layson, 21-10, 21-15; Ongcuanco prevailed over Nicole Esteban, 21-15, 21-14; Buiza outlasted Danielle Escobar, 21-17, 17-21, 21-14; Pelegrino rapped Danica Llamas, 21-10, 21-6; Muyrong won over Rachelle Dizer, 21-11, 21-11; Sandiego toppled Mary Anne Maranon, 21-18, 21-15; and Magno held
off Carmela Zamora, 21-13, 21-17.

Defending champion Joper Escueta posted his second straight win in the boys U-19 as he ripped Aaron Malata, 21-1, 21-6, to set a third round duel with Lorenzo
Leonardo, who bounced back from an opening set setback to beat Clarence Filart, 14-21, 21-14, 21-18.

Kevin Cudiamat also reached the Last 16 with a 21-8, 21-6 demolition of Paolo Infante for a third round showdown with Christian Sison, who foiled Alcala?s upset bid with a 17-21, 21-16, 21-16 decision.
